regards

It shouldn't need configured to give the PC an IP address though, unless DHCP has been disabled.
Have you tried resetting it do the default settings?

well when i resetted the dlink i got into online settings via admin/admin password but could not make any sense out of the screens i looked at portforwarding site but the screens they showed were totally different from the screen i could see so did not know what to do i can browse the net via i.e but if i try aol software i get that message

It could be that the aol software is still looking for the original modem connection, try creating a new location from the aol software, it should pick up the new connection method.
