AORUS X7 CPU heat issues...

Hi,

I bought an X7 v2 (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=LT-000-AU) from here a few months back. Have barely used it since I picked up a MacBook Pro in the meantime, but just now I was setting the AORUS up for my girlfriend and it's driving me nuts.

It came pre-loaded with Windows 8.1 and every time I would start it up the fan would kick into over drive, really really loud. I checked on the task manager and a bunch of weird Windows applications were running taking up 40% CPU. Checked online and tried to find ways to disable them, but it seemed every time I did something else came up.

Figured I'd do a fresh format and have just finished setting it up now and all the bloatware crap is no longer there, however at idle the CPU is still around the high 50s or low 60s (this seems really high to me) and whenever I use an application (for example Firefox) it will jump to 70c+ and the fans kick in.

Honestly at this point I'm pretty ****ed. Spent £1,700 for this and it's a bit of a joke. Not to be trolling on Windows laptops (I'm a hardcore Windows desktop user) but these laptops are a freakin' joke compared to Macs. Everything about them is crappier. Don't even get me started on the touch pad quality on this thing!

So long story short, anyone got some advice on how not to have my laptop sounding like a vacuum cleaner every time it's running? Is this some sort of hardware fault to have the CPU so hot?

Any advice or comments appreciated as usual. Thank you

My P170EM CPU idles @ 45'c, this is with IC Diamond Tim. You could try disabling hardware accel in Google/Firefox, however those temps tho a little high are expected in such a thin laptop with that kind of internal setup.

Also see if you have the latest bios, as it could have a less aggressive fan profile.

Thank you for the reply.

I'll try the suggestion with Firefox, but it was just an example. It does the same with anything remotely CPU intensive.

And yes I do have the latest BIOS. Updated it via the official site along with all the other drivers

A quick look online and some reviews have shown temps in the low to mid 40's, with the same internal components. Now sure if they used a laptop cooling pad or raised it to give better ventilation.

It maybe worth contacting CS at OcUK to see if they can help as it could be down to insufficient tim or poor contact with the HSF assembly to the CPU.

If it's just the noise that concerns you maybe try using the fan control software that comes with Gigabyte and Aorus laptops. I know my old Gigabyte laptop had a "Stealth" mode for the fans. Maybe Aorus has a similar one?

Obvioulsy it's still going to stay hot but at least you wont be driven crazy by the noise.

Oh the idle temp is totally wrong, that's for sure. My father recently got an MSI GS60 from here too (similar spec) and his CPU at idle is never over 35c, so 55+ is just silly.

Problem is I'm not in the UK so I'm not really sure what they could do. Sending back would be a total pain in the butt. It would probably be better me taking it somewhere local here

Thanks for the info.

I actually downloaded all the official control stuff and no where is there a fan setting. It should be there too as I've seen people on YouTube using it to quiet their machines

AdladUK: When I had my x7 v2 (briefly) I noted that it ships by default with the Windows Power setting set to Maximum Performance by default. This setting holds the CPU at its Max Turboboost setting even when the machines not doing anything. I noted that after a few minutes of sitting on the desktop it would start to spin the fans up pretty quickly.

Try dropping the Power setting to balanced and hopefully it should quieten down a bit. Do note that the fan noise on the x7 v2 is noted in most reviews.

Robbsy is right, there definitely is a stealth mode setting there somewhere (although I can't remember where - I only had the machine for a few hours).

Maybe a re-TIM and cooling mat will help the problem.

Best of luck!

Can you please post a screenshot of the processes u see while your CPU temp goes up. There could be unwanted apps.

Hi,

That's my point though... The idle temp is 50-60 (when CPU usage is near 0%), so opening literally any program will set it off.

Before when I opened Firefox the vacuum started up. Then when I opened Speccy it did it for a second. Before that when I was installing the latest graphics drivers it was going crazy. Anything sets it off.

Are there any well known applications for controlling laptop fan speed I could use? Something to stop it triggering this ridiculous over reaction

Hello,

Thanks for the advice.

I changed the power setting to balanced right after I did the fresh format. I just now changed the maximum processor state to 75% in the power options. Doesn't seem to have had any effect on idle temps though

Small chassis with a flawed cooling system where the CPU is cooled by heatpipes that are used to cool the GPU's.

Aggressive fan profile is prob entirely needed sadly.

This thing is anything but small... It's feels pretty huge and heavy to me. Maybe not so much compared to other "gaming" laptops, but after using my Mac it feels like a tank.

Anyway I learnt my lesson. Gaming on a laptop is completely and utterly pointless. Having a 17" screen on a laptop is stupid. The whole thing is just a waste of money

Hi there Guys

Here are a few images which may help with the cooling on the X7. Being honest with you guys I have used the X7 quite a lot and I have never come across this before.

The X7's are really quiet for their spec and temps are good too.

Kinda strange because I have no fan controls on mine:

[All the latest drivers installed too

Hi AdladUK,

We asked Baily to upload those images last week, but maybe these were just for the new X7 Pro, maybe that's why different.

Please bare with us, as we have sent the thread to HQ product manager for some more informed technical insight !

Hope to post again tomorrow when they respond.

Regards,

Gigabyte UK NB Team

Great OcUK and Gigabyte feedback.

Now that is what l call service.

(This also includes other Vendor Rep's working with OcUK before any noses get out of joint :) )

All the latest drivers installed too

Hi AdladUK,

If the problem still exists after you installed all the latest drivers. Can you please provide BIOS EC, Drivers' Update & Command & Control's drivers' version so that our engineers can look into it?

We'd try to resolve your problem ASAP.
