It has been named as the best film made in the last 30 years by the Circle of London Film Critics, and I simply... do not get it.

I watched it again on film 4 the other day, Its a rambling incoherent mess of a film, spectacular and entertaining yes, dark and dark humoured, but a total and utter shambles of a production rambling its way throughout ad libbed lines and improvised scenes from start to finish, I`ve just never understood what's so special about a cinematic mess. It is a remarkable film, this is true, but It sure as hell isn't the best film in 30 years.

I find the tale of how it was made pretty much runs parallel to the themes of the film itself. over budget, screwed up, completely chaotic.

have a read. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1233293/The-maddest-movie-Why-Apocalypse-Now-finest-film-modern-times.html

I understand why people just don't get it. However it is a masterpiece whether you like it or not and no that's not subjective it's a fact.

Have you watched the Redux version yet?

It makes a lot more sense than the original version, which was already a masterpiece IMHO.

There's part of your problem, this is not a film that should be interrupted with commercial breaks.

The lack of continuity and resolution and making any sense is an integral part of the overall feel of the film, if you don't get that then fair enough.

I also "don't get it". Didn't enjoy it at all.

Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, We Were Soldiers: they're good 'nam films.

Sort of agree, I do think the first 2/3rds are really good but when it actually gets to Brando, dunno maybe it was everyone building it up but I didn't really think it was anything special, just kinda weird. 7/10 from me, first 2/3rds are very good but the 3rd doesn't do it for me.

It's only their opinion, there are many “best films of”. I've never had a problem with it, it is a great film. Watch Redux it makes a little more sense.

The Redux version is excellent, the better of the two in my opinion. I don't know if it's the best movie of the last 30 years but it's definitely the best war movie made.

I think the story behind the movie, the making of movie is soemthing else that adds to it, all the problems the production faced etc

I like the movie, watching Hearts of Darkness gave me a better appreciation of it. In particular the chaos surrounding its production, including Martin Sheen's on-camera breakdown, bad scheduling that resulted in sets being wiped out during the monsoon season, borrowing helicopters that were frequently recalled by the government to fight (I forget where they filmed it), to Brando ignoring the script and improvising (a method man me thinks) kind of reflected the chaos that was the Vietnam war. I love Full Metal Jacket, but it is cold sometimes as Kubrick movies feel to me often, with Apocalypse Now I felt like the entire crew experienced a little of what a soldier in the Vietnam war experienced, and somehow an entertaining movie came out the other end.

Personally I think that this film loses a lot of its impact when watched on a small screen. In the cinema it was awesome.

Completely awesome and stunning film that has many messages about Vietnam and war in general.

IMO if you want to disengage brain and let yourself be entertained this isn't the film for you.

Opinions are exactly that, if you agree then thats fine , in this case I happen to agree. ;)
