Apologies for this thread, but 'n00b' needs help

Shows up for me! (White building, near the sea front)

So Alex, if I held a gun to your head and said: Name a camera... which would you say? ;)

Don't the fuji's have the god awful digital screen view finder thing? *EEEUUURRGGHH*

I'd pay the extra to get a DSLR purely for the fact you get a decent view finder. How you are supposed to take a decent photograph when you cannot even tell what's in frame, let alone what's in focus i'll never know.

Really does depend on budget though. If you feel it's something you could easily get into in the long run, then it would be well worth getting a dslr simply for the flexibility that being able to change lens gives you.

However, you will quite quickly end up spending a fortune when you start to convince yourself that you just need this, that and the other to help you take better pics :p

I would probably say go for a Nikon D50 if your looking for a decent quality camera, that has the advantage of upgrading in the future if you decide you want too buy some more lenses. And a Nikon D40 if you want something smaller and compact that offers very decent quality at a low price. The only problem with the D40 is that even the low end lenses that fit this camera are very expensive, and the high end lenses are hard to get hold of. Only HSM or AF-S lenses will autofocus with a D40. A D50 can autofocus with any nikon fit lens AFAIK.

The only problem I see with buying a D50 is that you are buying into the Nikon system, which is unfortunate really :p

I do like the look of the D40/D50.

If i said Cannon 350D, or Nikon D40/50, would the room be split?!

Will see about picking one up, need to boost my poker winnings first!

Thanks for the comments guys, really appreciated. Sorry for the noobness!

i had this same decision to make a couple of weeks ago.

A few months ago I bought a olympus c740UZ (whihc is a bridge camera) from fleabay.

Was ok, but I soon wanted something a little better, so i satrted looking around, determinded not to go down the out of budget dslr route.

I spotted a fuji s5600, and almost bought it but decided to do a little research.

Whilst doing so i headed in a high street shop (edited to apease the forum police) and to get a feel of one (highly recomended beofre buying any camera) and they had a s9600 on display.

I picked it up and it felt good, with a the zoom dial and manual focus dial actually being on the lens, which felt very good to me.

Came back onto this forum to ask the guys in the know what they thought of it, and to do some online reseach into the 9600

Then someboidy mention the Nikon d50 ki, refurbished for 264 (thats the same price as the best price I had found on the fuji 29600)

I searched and found the supplier and after going into a camera shop to have a feel of one (they only had a d40 though).. yup I ordered one, ready for my birthday (which was two days ago) and also got myself a sigma 70-300 lens and a very cheap (disapointed when it came because it was tiny, looked much bigger on the picture) bag.

Havent actually gone out with it yet (hopefully will tomorrow) but have played around with it in the house

Photograhy can be a massive finance drain but it can be very rewarding.

I would personally sugest, getting a cheap second hand bridge camera (i payed £50 for my olympus) and seeing :-

a) do you find yourself using all the manual options
b) are you quickly wishing you could do more with the camera
c) can you get creative with shutter speeds / aperatures / light sources etc

if yes to the above (specially a and b) save up a little and get an entry level dslr and lens

if the bridge camera is giving you good reuslts you are happy with or you find yourself just using Auto mode, then stick with that or get a higher end point and click compact.

for me, the decsion to leave my olympus and move up was largely due to some pictures I took at a Stoke City match, and Moon pictures, not quite giving me the settings I wanted.

There's things I see (eclipse was one) which I think... if only I had a camera that's part of the reason which I'm interested in getting one. Always been interested in photography, and have had a play with a friends camera to decent results.

Bolerus, really enjoyed that write up. Get out there and take a few pcitures and post your results please mate :)

I've got the S5600 and I think it's a great starters camera. I was a total noob just like you and this was my first real camera. Check the pictures on my flickr in my sig for pictures. It seems to do what I want well and because you can't get new lenses etc, it only costs the money you pay.

As for the LCD viewfinder, I find it fine to use, you can see what is in the picture just like a normal viewfinder but its digital.

Hope this helps.

Really impressed with some of those shots, were they all done with the S5600?

Once you've used a decent slr view finder you'll realise how incorrect you are :)

Yes, all shots with the S5600 with no addons etc.

I've seen those add on lenses but for like £80 ish I don't think they're worth it on a £120 camera.

As for the viewfinder, I guess i'll just have to use a proper one but I don't see how it will be better
