Apple 12.9" iPad?

If they were going to do something like that I'd imagine they'd create a special dock for it (built in keyboard, USB, card reader, thunderbolt? etc...) But as you said it moves away from its main purpose and in your case a MB hybrid or in mine a iMac hybrid

I highly doubt it will run OSX though to be honest. If I was a betting man I'd put my money on a modified version of iOS.

The problem with a 13" screen on such a device is that it's been proven to work nicely with a WIMP interface. I'm not sure what sort of "Pro" would choose a 13" iPad over a 13" MacBook.

Having said that, in a clamshell/hybrid configuration with a modified version of iOS that can run apps side by side (maybe with some fancy scaling tricks you could run two side by side - one in portrait and one in landscape orientation) at the right price it could prove popular with people who require a more capable device (relative to the iPad) without necessarily the complexity of OSX.

Surely a retina 12.9 screen is more likely for a supposed redsigned air for next year than a huge ipad?

Don't buy these rumours at all - the only way Apple will push screen sizes up is if they can do so with minimal increases on the current dimensions of the devices they already sell (i.e. edge to edge type stuff with edge-touching rejection), e.g. with the iPhone a big part of the design brief is/was that it's able to be operated with one hand. With the iPad Air, it's finally comfortable for most people to hold with one hand while the other operates it so it would be very strange for them to make something huge that takes a step backward there.

Also the lack of any physical evidence from the usual parts leaks etc is telling - I never believe any rumours now until the Chinese bloggers start posting pics of parts wigged off the manufacturing lines.
