Apple 4th March 2026 Event

I'm an idiot — I completely misread the press release.

The "Studio Display" is barely an upgrade — TB5, better camera and speakers, but the same panel.

It's the "Studio Display XDR" that has mini-LED, 2,000 nits, and 120Hz but has now been downgraded to 27" and is £3,000.

Frankly, **** that. What a waste of time.

Exactly. There’s no reason the regular Studio Display couldn’t have 120hz after all these years. Gimped to not eat into the XDR sales.

It is safe to upgrade now.

True, safe in the knowledge that something better isn't about to be launched. But it wasn't a great proposition before this 'upgrade'.

It was the old 60Hz panel I was waiting for them to replace. I just don't think £1,500 today on that panel is a good proposition, and I'm not prepared to spend £3,000 on the XDR.

This 100%.

Best Studio Display is still the Kuycon G32p :P Weird they got rid of the 32" as it's a great size at 6k...although Windows scaling is more flexible than MacOS.

The Apple displays have always been out of my price range. My current monitors are about 10 years old as this point. The only additional thing I'd like is 120Hz but I can live without it.

Yeah I'm pretty disappointed, I don't think the XDR is worth it. The studio display price point was the sweet spot. If they add the 120Hz and higher nits. would have been an instant buy for me.

Smoothness all the time is really nice when navigating, scrolling and scanning. I can do 60hz, but at this price point and stage of the product lifecycle it’s a big miss for me.
Even 75Hz or 90Hz would have been a noticeable improvement. And no 32" is odd.
No oled makes sense to me. The tech is too new & compromised for Apple to be adopting it in "professional" grade kit like this.

They're still 10 year old panels aren't they too?

I'm still struggling to figure out what tech to get for a new monitor (photography) - IPS or OLED. So many different things say either one is better.

Not sure what crack they are smoking. Not going to pay more than £2000 for the Studio Display XDR version. £3000+ a joke with the current completion that exists.

According to Apple, Macs that have an M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, M2, or M3 will only support the Studio Display XDR at 60Hz. All other features remain available.

For the full 120Hz refresh rate, you'll need to have a Mac with one of the following chips:
  • ‌M2‌ Pro, ‌M2‌ Max, ‌M2‌ Ultra
  • M3 Pro, M3 Max, M3 Ultra
  • M4 Pro, M4 Max
  • M5, M5 Pro, M5 Max

This is actually a bit of an oof - from the clickbait muppet site, but suspect they'll be in the small print for the displays. I iknow a lot of people are holding on to the M1 series as they're still infinitely capable. Especially the Ultra.

Edit: Couldn't stomach just sourcing from that horrible piece of clickbait. From the horses mouth.

Studio Display XDR is compatible with the following Mac models with Apple silicon and macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 or later:

16-inch MacBook Pro (2021 and later)

14-inch MacBook Pro (2021 and later)

13-inch MacBook Pro (M1, 2020 and later)

15-inch MacBook Air (2023 and later)

13-inch MacBook Air (M1, 2020 and later)

Mac Studio (2022 and later)

Mac mini (2020 and later)

Mac Pro (2023 and later)

24-inch iMac (2021 and later)

Mac models with M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, M2, and M3 support Studio Display XDR at up to 60Hz. All other Studio Display XDR features are supported.
