Apple care...advice please

Hi all, I may have the opportunity to buy a second hand Macbook. I don't know the previous owner as I'm getting it from a shop. Is there any way to find out if its covered with Apple Care and whether its transferrable to me?
If not, can I take out Apple care? Where and how please

You can check the serial number online to see how much warranty is left.

If it's less than a year old, you can buy Applecare for it, I think.
