Google/Android have some ties with a good few manufacturers for their setup - include Audi, GM, Hyundai and Honda as part of their Open Automotive Alliance.

Not sure how it will all pan out but considering Google are light years ahead with Driverless Cars, they may have the jump on Apple just now. I guess time will tell.

Seriously though, in my experience touchscreen is pants when you're in a car that's moving, especially with your arm outstretched to the centre console - "Just press phone....*bump*...nope that's podcasts, try again....*bump*...maps...." Buttons are much better because you can actually touch them before you press them.

Exactly this, especially in a car with hard suspension and run flats!

Resorted to always using the dial and buttons while driving and never touch the screen.

You have to take your eyes off the road for too long when trying to use a touchscreen correctly.
 
Great so if I change my car I will need to buy a iphone if I want to make full use of the multimedia system, ugh. And do you really need to be able to read your messages as you drive, that sounds incredibly stupid.
 
Oh man I wonder if this will change my car buying habits in the future.

If a manufacture is tied into just one mobile phone OS then I wouldn't buy a new phone to support my choice of car.

Hopefully there will be a unified system that allows both iOS and Android to be linked with cars.
