I'm currently specking up a new video editing/photography facility here at work and am wondering about the screen options. We are looking at putting in 41 Mac Pros (30 of them dual screen). The obvious option is to put in 24" Apple Cinema displays. But I wondered about the option of using some of the lower end Eizo, Lacie or Nec monitors instead.

The price ideally needs to be kept around £500 ex vat or lower. Glossy screens are ideally a no no, bonus points for a programmable LUT, hood would be a bonus (On the Lacie and Eizo monitors, can you split the hood so it only covers the far sides of a dual screen setup?) and ideally I'm looking at 1920x1200 res so probably 24" monitors although 22" monitors of the same res would be even better due to space constraints. Any ideas?

How does the Eizo FlexScan S2243W hold up against the Apple Cinema Display?

The glossy cinema displays are truely awful for editing if you ask me. They're also rated as generally poor for colour work (any sort of proofing) due to the glossy coating being difficult to replicate in print. Apple have compromised the professional use for something that looks good in the shop and on your desk.

The lower end Eizos are also subject to change as all the good ones get made into ColorEdge monitors, though their whole manufacturing process is probably still more consumer friendly than Dells or HP's, you'll likely just get a smaller screen for your money as they're pretty pricey for what they are.

U2410 would be the obvious choice if you can be sure of ordering 71 of them and not needing to send half back because they go pink on one side.

Personally I would go for a load of NEC 2490WUXi2's. They also have the added advantage of looking super pro.

Oh and RE: the hood. Yes, you can split it so it only covers one side. At least you can with Eizos.
