Can you use a standard 27" Apple Cinema Display (Mini DisplayPort) straight from a Thunderbolt socket on for example a Macbook Pro or more importantly, the new Mac Pro?

Yeh, thunderbolt carries displayport natively.

This is as i thought. Though researching it i couldn't get a straight answer as loads of people are just talking about running them "daisy chain" off of Thunderbolt displays. Also i find Apple's website irritating trying to navigate.

Display Port-only MBPs can't connect to Thunderbolt displays, but Thunderbolt MBPs can connect to Display Port-only displays just fine.
