Apple drops Free Applecare, Lowers Discount on Macs for Students

Well if they don't do a hardware update in time for the back to Uni plus this reduction in discounts then all the power to PC manufacturers

I am honestly losing the want to buy Apple hardware now. The only time I really need the processing power is some amateur photography work and Apple's hardware is outdated in that regard.

I've been a mac user for about 20 years and I've got to say that this non hardware refresh followed by discount cut has made me really look at the latest windows 10 offerings. I love OSX and Mac OS previous but even that seems to be in trouble.

Apple was always on the cutting edge over the last few years but their offering at the moment is pretty rubbish. Mac Pro is a joke for the price and Haswell still in the MBP :(

I love MacOS, so for the first time ever I built my own!

They need to find cost savings somewhere, they're down to however many hundred billion dollars in their warchest.

Bad news if you're a student but if you're not I'd always buy my Apple hardware from a place that offers a 3 year warranty.

(Am I allowed to mention a high street retailer who sells Apple hardware or does that breach the rules?)

Well OcUK don't sell Apple hardware so you're fine - I guess you mean John Lewis?

/edit - My lad was on the verge of buying a Mac with HE discount and now it's been chopped right back, he's looking at something different. The removal of the three year Applecare is quite a shock as that's a massive plus point.

You can but you are not comparing apples for apples. 3 year applecare is worth its weight in gold.

I'd rather have the JL warranty. Have had poor experiences with Apple, including them trying to tell my sister (with her 3 years of AppleCare) that she had skilled something on her MacBook when she hadn't. JL don't play stupid games like that.

I've no experience of JL warranty but I've used Applecare a few times and it's been superb. Rocking up at a genius bar to have the faulty item either fixed while I wait or swapped instantly. Is that how JL works, straight swap, or do they send stuff away for repair?

I've had experience of both JL and Apple "aftercare"... and I have had great experiences with both to be fair to them.

John Lewis will just replace the item. I had faulty Bose headphones (£250) and they have straight replaced them with a brand new pair 3 times as a button keeps breaking on them.

I guess the "benefit" of JL over Apple is that it gives you two stores to go to in the event of something breaking... If JL can't fix it, you still have Apple to fall back on in the first year (and then JL in the second).

The issue with JL warranty and apple products is that sometimes they opt to repair over replace - and usually don't use apple direct meaning you forfeit the ability to return to apple in the future. I used to work in an AARC and we we once received an iMac that JL had repaired the year previous (although the customer didnt disclose this prior to opening the Machine and us speaking to them again).
The logic board had been double-sided-taped (strong stuff but still) to the enclosure instead of re-screwed which is ridiculous, I could hardly believe my eyes - I'm not even sure the stuff was properly heat resistant.

The HE agreement between Apple and the HE sector has expired that's all - they're time limited, usually about 4-5 years. A new one is being tendered at the moment so we may yet still see something being put back in place.

JL has 45 stores across the UK actually.
