Dug out an old MiniDV camera and want to back up some footage.

Went down to a local store and bought a 4-pin to 4-pin Firewire cable.

Does it fit? No. Why? Apple have designed some ridiculous non-standard plug that the 4-pin cable won't go into. Absolutely typical of Apple and infuriating, it won't plug into either of the two Macbook Pros or the iMac in this house.

Can someone please let me know what I need as I'm confused.

Ta.

It'll probably be a 9 pin FireWire connection that supports upto FireWire 800 speeds I believe (I think it has a theoretical bigger max distance without a repeater than previous FireWire standards)

We use them at work to connect a couple of canon hv40 FireWire camcorders. A simple 9 pin to 4 pin FireWire cable should do the job nicely :)

Apple designed Firewire, I don't think you'll find it's non-standard, seeing as it's their standard! :p

Presumably your Mini-DV camera has the mini Firewire port on it (Or Sony i.Link as it was actually known), which is why the cable you are using won't connect to either a Firewire or Firewire 800 port on your Mac.

You either need a cable that changes to standard Firewire or an adapter. I remember I used to use an Apple branded adapter to convert from large to small that came with my original iPod when I used to use DV.
