Hello everybody :P

My Question:
When owning a mac you are sent a copy of the operating system along with every purchase of the machine.
What I have done is lost my copy of the disc that came with the machine (Had Panther 10.3). I've now come to sell the machine and am wondering where I stand legally in selling it with a copied version of a disc I was supplied with?

Im not bothered how u copy so you wont be condoning copying etc, I dont want to know how to copy the discs blah blah.

I just wonder about the legal side to it. As I used to own the original disc can I sell it with a copy of the original disc?

Any ideas chaps?

Thanks,
Solarius2 :D

(damn just realised I should post in the apple software section >.< , admin pls move :D)

Hmm I see - is it 'legal' for the new owner to request a copy of panther from Apple as they are the new owner of the machine?

Firstly as OSX only works on mac hardware, it means that it's not as if it's a copy of the OS outside of this 1:1 relationship.

Personally I don't think apple will care if the machine is sold on - potentially they have continuing revenue stream through the new owner (upgrade to tiger, new product sales etc). Better still - if you're staying on apple then they've just gained a customer!

You should be able to order a replacement CD for panther for something like £7. IIRC you will need a serial number from the machine.

You could probably get a copy of the install discs from Apple if it's still under warranty.

Not sure they'd give you Tiger, but I bet you could wangle Panther off them for no charge :)

As for copying the discs, I believe Tiger is 5.6GB so you'd need a Dual Layer DVD burner for this. Otherwise, it could be done in disk utility easy enough.
