Hey,

Having trouble with housemates computer. This morning, randomly, his internet cut out saying it cannot assign an IP (and something on the same network may have the same IP). At the same time a message popped up on my PC saying something on the same network has the same IP as me. But my internet is now working fine.

Have tried it with my PC and all other devices turned off, but his mac still wont work.

Have also tried resetting the hub.

Stuff to know...

It's over wireless
netgear hub
virgin media
He has a mac pro, osx 10.6
I have a PC, W7

What can we do?

Have you checked the Mac Pro is getting an IP address from the DHCP server (the router normally)? Go to System Preferences -> Networks and look at either the Ethernet (for LAN) or Airport if it is wireless.

You should also check if it has got a static address and remove that if it has.

Also open Terminal (CMD+Space then type Terminal into Spotlight) and ping the router.

Probably something to do with the network config.
