I am looking to buy a new laptop to replace my desktop computer and have found a few brand new Macbook air 13" laptops on Amazon for around £700. The Macbook looks like it would be a good choice. Are there any Windows laptops that rival the Air for around the same price? I don't really need to be able to play games on it. I just need it to have good battery life and be reasonably quick.

What would you guys recommend?

There are no Windows laptops that rival the air for the price. Especially when it comes to battery life. Also, the trackpad on Apple laptops is above and beyond both the synaptic and sentelic track/touchpads that appear on the majority of Air (or Apple laptop in general) competitors. Fingerworks was a company bought out by Apple to acquire their touch technology and in my opinion it is one of the best acquisitions Apple made.

I have a Gigabyte X11, which when it was launched, was a competitor to the 11" Air. I'm lucky if I get four hours to a charge on the X11 and the sentelic trackpad in it is awful on Windows and it's pretty much useless under Linux. The Air on the other hand, is claimed to get in and around 9 hours for the 11" and more for the 13". Real world examples I've seen people claiming 10 hours. The trackpad on Apple laptops, once you're used to it, all other trackpads pale in comparison. You'll resent having to use a laptop without one. The Synaptics multitouch pad in my Clevo is good, but I still use a mouse because the synaptics is simply nowhere near as good as the Apple trackpad.

The only other thing is the OS. Many people don't like OS X because it does things differently. Both from Windows and Linux. Personally, I like OS X in the regards that it has all the power of Unix and is a good all round desktop experience. Again, it's just a matter of getting used to how the OS works. I also find OS X keyboard shortcuts a lot saner than Windows or Linux default keyboard shortcuts.

Well I ended up buying a 2014 Macbook Air 13" laptop. And hated it!

The design of the laptop itself looks amazing but the screen quality was garbage. When scrolling down webpages text became a blurry mess. It was giving me a headache. I just didn't get on with OSX either. It just seems like everything is just that little bit more difficult to do versus doing the same things in windows.

I ended up returning the laptop after a day.

I should also add that the default email client on OSX was basically broken. It wouldn't download my email from Hotmail (I know I know but I have had these accounts for years). I couldn't find a decent third party client either. Certainly nothing in the same league as Live Mail. Email functionality is as basic as it comes but it was a total pain in the ass getting it set up.

The trackpad is indeed very good and the gestures are excellent. It could even play some games at a decent framerate.

But the poor quality screen + lack of a decent email client for hotmail meant that an Apple Macbook Air is not for me.

** No insults ** There is nothing wrong with Apple Mail with Hotmail, I've been using it with my three hotmail accounts for years.

You are lucky then. A lot of other people have been having problems too.

I am no Windows or Apple supporter. I think both Windows 8 and Mac OSX are not very good. All I want is software that works well. In my experience MacOSX mail just didn't work.

I was actually quite shocked at the scrolling issues on the Air. For £700 you expect a decent screen at least.

Yep, Hotmail with Apple Mail is a pain. I had the same problem when I first got mine, and then for about two years after.
