Hi, girlfriend starts uni in September and his studying engineering and she needs a laptop! Would the Apple MacBook Pro touchpad 2017 base model be good for running word,CAD, reports and stuff like that ?

Or would you recommend something else ?

Just want too surprise her with a laptop before she starts.

Many thanks Dan

Unlikely to need anything that powerful for engineering to be honest (I have a Masters in Engineering Science and anything that needed serious grunt was done on dedicated university equipment) so I'd save yourself a heap of money and buy her a reasonable spec Windows machine or an entry-level MB if she's set on Apple.

I'm sat here typing on a company-owned Touch MBP and I wouldn't buy one if it were my own money, keyboard is pretty poor, touchbar is pointless and the USB-C only approach is a pain in the bum. Microsoft Surface would be my pick for university as in general you'll find any applications they use/recommend will be Windows first or sometimes Windows-only.

On a side note, unless you are seriously rolling in cash then I'd be wary of buying a laptop for a girlfriend. Many/most relationships don't survive university and you may regret it later if it represents a significant amount of cash for you.
