Apple Mobile Device Service

I have this annoying problem where Apple Mobile Device Service uses about 17% of my processor (almost one core maxed). I assume this is an iTunes dependency as this is the only apple software I have installed.

All of the times this has happened has been when I have had iTunes open and it doesn't go away when I close iTunes so I usually just kill the process.

My question is, is anyone else having this problem and how can I fix it?
Also, what does it actually do?

Thanks

It is the service that communicates with any attached iDevices (Pods, pads, phones etc)

Not encountered that issue before, but if you have none of those devices I see no reason why you couldn't disable it.

I have a jailbroken 3GS on 5.1.1 but it is never attached when AMDS hogs my processor.
Unless, it is wireless sync trying to communicate. I never use it, so I shall try disabling it tonight.
