Apple owners strange behaviour

I agree....OSX most certainly doesn't "just work".

It does though, at least for me anyway

I really struggled with Windows 8.0 / 8.1 / 8.1 u1 and finally gave in and made the switch. I'll agree it did take me a couple of weeks to get the hang of it, but no way in hell would I go back to Windows

The excitement is built up by Apple's secrecy on new products. This means it gets publicised more and people make money from trying to guess what they're going to come up with next.

For Apple it's free advertising, which is why they keep the secrecy.

If you thing the WWDC crowd were a little rowdy, never ever go to any sporting event held in the USA.

You might like Sweden though, as a friend of mine watching a football match on TV in a bar there was asked to leave after cheering when his team scored a goal.

Sounds like my sort of place. Why neither need or want this type of childish school yard behaviour.

But why? most folk go into a store, have a browse at what's new, have a think about it and then make a purchase or leave the store.

I agree with all of the above except the final part, it just works... I find a lot of things to be totally backwards!

Whilst "just works" is clearly never going to be true in terms of desktop computing, I've found OSX to e much closer to "just works" than Windows. If I didn't need Windows for my day job I'd gladly not use it (I use a Mac at work and I'm trying to do as much as I can in OSX)

I detest the iPhones, mainly due to their price. For what they are, essentially a telephone, they're overpriced and waayyy to expensive.

It's more like a pocket computer than a phone. You can get a mobile telephone for £10. Getting the power of a pocket computer (and Apple's build quality) and the price suddenly isn't so bad. Not cheap, for sure. But then Apple stuff isn't cheap. Remember that flagship Android phones cost the same so it's not an Apple thing per se.

I am typing this on my 27" iMac - while running Windows 8.1

:D

Not sure how you can find Windows 8.1 to "just work" better than OSX. I don't mind a Windows 7 but really can't get on with Windows 8(or 8.1) at all.

Personally I'm really looking forward to Yosemite. Mavericks is great but 10.10 looks so much better still...

Not looking forward to the translucency thing - has there been any clarification on whether this disables when using graphics software?

It's not all 'paying for quality' nor are their devices the most reliable out there - certainly in the upper segment though.

I bet if you took your rMBP into an apple store and they found a problem they would replace the hardware... Aftercare is included in the price* and it is the best (bar John Lewis) in the technology sector.

I hope you can disable it... Seems very pointless... Whilst it may be nice to look at, Its fine as it is...

Doesn't like me pushing it hard and has some behavioural quirks that I don't really like...

Apps or OS crashing? I haven't had a Kernel Panic (BSOD equivalent) since Snow Leopard, unless there's been faulty hardware. Apps sometimes crash but that's never going to stop.

I push my Retina MacBook Pro very hard with Final Cut Pro / Motion and 1080p Apple ProRes 4444 footage. Doesn't skip a beat. I'd have yours checked by Apple to see if there's a hardware issue.

Edit: And they are overpriced/expensive (if people pay it, it's clearly not too much!) - look at Apples published profit margins to see that. It's not all 'paying for quality' nor are their devices the most reliable out there - certainly in the upper segment though.

They're premium products with premium price rages. Expensive but not overpriced. Apple's profi margin isn't relevant really.

I've had a lot of the newer Apple computers and had only two issues. Both fixed, for free, outside of the warranty. My iMac was fitted with a new screen. I don't think Dell would have done that and it's £400 from their profits so they don't just care about profit...

Apple gear isn't for everybody though...

I wanna hear 'whoops'a and get hi 5's from staff when I'm making my way to the counter at Mcdonalds on the opening day of their latest burger promotion (i like the current supposed u.s style ones)

I've never seen a kernel panic before, and when I had a rMBP I did the same without issue.

My MP just keeps on going and going and going. Only time I ever got it spin up the fan was i Windows 8, running 3Dmark, unigine, and cinebench at the same time for the lols.

Still din't skip a beat and it was the only time I heard the fan.

Pretty much every laptop that isn't a MacBook is either terrible, or costs more than the equivalent MacBook. I struggle to find a better value laptop.

My 9 year old Vaio is still usable as in it will play 720P video and support up-to-date browsers.

The same can't realistically be said for the MacBook of the time, the iBook G4. :)

How is that a fair comparison really? What were the respective prices back then? What metrics are you using to compare usability?

If someone came to me with a 9yr old laptop, i'd have to question their ability to gauge speed, performance and expections of laptops etc. Also, question their ability to let go of the miser-within!

Agreed, or worse, they're those horrible ones designed to look like MacBooks but aren't.

Great machines and you can throw at lot at them.

Personally I don't agree with you guys that MacBooks are cheaper than their equivalent windows alternative but what you do find is that 2 year old MacBooks are still selling for 40-50% of their original price
You won't find that with any windows machine

In that sense then they do work out cheaper to own

The only true competitor for component quality, build assembly and aftersale support would be the likes of Sony and at a push Dell XPS.

Try getting those (realistic laptops - not some whacky one) specc'd up as close to the Apple products for the same price/less. On top of which, Dell tend to use pretty poor components with a high failure rate. In industry i've dealt with about 150 various Dell replacement/repairs. As a consumer i've had many issues with Alienware and their XPS laptops.

I've owned 3 Apple computers, 3 Dell and 2 Sony (relevant to my point).

They would. My 2 and a bit year old MacBook Pro which is out of warranty is getting a replacement logic board at no cost to myself at this time. It would be over £400 if I was paying...

That said a laptop of that price and perceived quality shouldn't have failed so soon. Apple realised that and are being very reasonable about it. You'd certainly never get that level of service even with another premium brand laptop purchased from say the Purple shirts. You'd have to take them to court. I popped into the Apple store for a polite chat, which was very pleasant.

That's a cherry picked example - last of the PowerPC range while Apple were engineering the first Intel machines behind the scenes. Bring it forward a year and you'd get a Core Duo MacBook which is as usable as the Vaio. My 2006 MBP is in daily use with it's 2nd owner, and meets the same criteria.
