Apple patents multitasking... *sigh*

It's not broad. If you read it, it says that to fall foul. Google would have to copy every feature.
Also they can and will get this one over turned. It's easy to show prior work.

an infringing device would have to copy almost every facet of the design to find itself on the wrong side of an ITC judgment.

So basically alter any one thing and you wouldn't fall foul. Which means android will be fine, as it won't be exactly the same, despite being very similar.

Thing is, it's an obvious feature and thus it shouldn't need or have a patent granted. If it described the implementation specifically, ie what code was used etc. then fair enough, but this is still silly.

If Apple ever patent "creating nonsensical sentence structures", my friend, you're going to be in a world of hurt. :D

As for the patent, there is literally no way this should ever have been awarded even in the form it's in. Apple have evidently once more exerted claim on their patent on "influencing the decisions of entities in a position of authority by means of the clandestine presentation of large sums of money to said entities".

Only if you read it like you have.
By the article it doesn't sound general at all and it's not really patent on app switching. It's a very defined patent that the chances are no one is going to fall foul of. Becuase it is far to precise and is why it was passed.

why do google never seem to fight back? how did apple get away with the notification drop down menu?

Its like 'French Connection UK' trying to patent the first letters of their name in what ever order they see fit to write them!!.. :D

Patents are Mad I tells ye!! :D

The thing I dont get is I've been able to do this on my nokia N95 (released before iphones existed) and even the current iPhone isn't able to do this so how did they manage to get the patent

They didn't patent multitasking, they patented a method for multitasking, regardless of how broad that method may or may not be. So it depends on whether the N95 used that same method (it didn't).

As far as I know the iPhone has had task switching in calls since it first hit the market by the way.

While not quite as broad as initially appears, its still not something a parent should ever be awarded for. Also my Xperia (original w/ Windows Mobile) has had something exactly like that for over 2 years (as far as I can see its exactly like the description in the second link in function if you use the Xperia UI instead of the WM one).

The patent was filed in Jan 2008.
