Not sure if this should to Apple section or Home cinema but ill try here first

I have an early 09 mac mini with xbmc running. Everything is good apart from the wireless mouse 'remote control'.

The apple remote looks compatible but it seems I will not be able to wake the mac mini via remote.

Is the Apple Remote the best cost-effective remote control for mac minis or are there better similarly priced alternatives?

Usage is very casual like navigation / start/pause etc. This has led me to rule out the harmony remotes due to cost.

I'm using the apple remote for xbmc, tried it with Plex as well and it works fine with both. You can control almost everything in xbmc with it so no issues there. You can also start xbmc or plex with it if you are currently on the desktop, just a setting to change.

I just leave mine running 24/7 so not sure about turning it on with the remote, but it's the latest version, doubt it changes anything.

Cheers. nice to know that the remote is very capable given the amount of buttons that it has.

I guess for £15 walking to turn it on is not too bad.

Yes I did that for ages, I never did bother to work out if I could use a button press to launch XBMC though, thats the issue that had me move to an Apple TV2 and then latterly to an intel NUC.

But.. the Apple remote is about the easiest I've found to use.. obviously the lack of buttons makes it a doddle to use without looking at it.

I use the Apple Remote with my mini for Plex. Plex is usually on and launches on startup etc. If I need to do anything else I use Rowmote on my iPad or iPhone.

Yea I did the same thing with kodi. Auto launch when the mini is turned on. Guess I wont be needing to figure out how to launch an app via remote.

Just need to get an ssd to make nearly instant boot up

it's really simple to change the default program the remote opens.

Go under Settings -> System -> Input Devices and make sure that "Allow start of XBMC using the remote" is enabled. When you exit XBMC then pressing the Menu button on the Apple Remote will start XBMC again.

Received the apple remote yesterday. Worked immediately without any setup. Cant believe how easy to use this remote lol. Wish I bought this sooner :D
