Apple has further distanced itself from Oracle's Java software framework with a Mac update released on Wednesday that removes a Java plugin from all Mac-compatible Web browsers.

Wednesday's update is the latest example of Apple distancing itself from Java. Apple stopped including pre-installed versions of Java in OS X and instead gives users the option to install the framework. More recently, Apple issued an update that turns off Java in the browser when users haven't used it recently.

The move follows advice from a variety of sources, Ars included, that users who don't regularly use Java should uninstall it from their systems. That will decrease the attack surface hackers target when looking for software vulnerabilities that allow them to install keyloggers and other malicious software on the computers they target. Ars recognizes this advice has proved controversial in the past, particularly to developers whose livelihoods depend on the wide availability of the Java platform, so readers are encouraged to think and decide for themselves.

Nice work Apple. :D

GOOD!!! hopefully flash will die a painful death too. :D

EDIT: but with all the lazy webdev in flash and apple share holdings in adobe I can't see it happening soon.

This is good for people that don't need it, but a bit strange for people that do - who will now have to go and fetch an additional version from Oracle and have two running concurrently on their system.

The previous solution that disabled the plugin after a period of activity was arguably the best both worlds, but of course that relied on Apple quickly updating their version. To me this reads as though they are not committed to doing that and so have insulated their version from the internet instead.

From what i read, java will still be available straight from Oracle to download and I'm sure they will release a version with an update checker like they do on the windows system that will automatically check for updates. But its just so dirty, over weight and out-aged. Maybe if they redesigned it from the bottom up and slimline it, it may be great again.

Don't get me started on flash. :)
