There's seems to be a huge price difference between the old TC and the new one, I can buy a new 2012 TC (500GB) for around the £100 mark vs £250 for the 2013 2TB version but which is best for me?

All I want it to do is backup automatically any changes - currently using a 250Gb internal drive in my mac book and the changes are unlikely to be dramatic, I don't require a huge retention 7 days would be fine.

I already have a good netgear wireless 1Gbit router and don't require airplay, Will the prior TC 2012 500Gb drive do the job?

Thanks in advance..

In short, the older model would be absolutely fine, and that seems to be a good price to me.

The main difference between the two is 802.11ac vs 802.11n. Aside from that, the feature list is the same. Unless you have an 802.11ac device in the house, you won't notice the difference (aside from the improved speeds of the newer model due to the antennas).

None of the AirPort models apart from the Express support AirPlay.

Just re-read the post, 500GB? The only TC that was 500GB was the 1st and 2nd gen, the generation just gone was available in 2/3TB configurations!

Double check before you purchase :)

I've got the now 1 gen old 802.11n Time Capsule in 3TB flavour that I'll soon be swapping for one of the new ones.

The only reasons are:

- I'm going to be buying a Macbook Air with AC wifi
- I'm swapping our iPad2 and iPod touch for a 64GB iPad Mini when the new model comes out later this year with AC WiFi
- We are having our first child in December, and this is going to be the last splurge for a while. Almost certainly our new phones in the next 12 months will be the new iPhone, which again, will have AC wifi

Noticing the commonality....?!!!

I've got one of the new TCs. Watch out for the packaging - it's VERY easy for the Time Capsule to fall out when you open the box.
