Apple TV 4

Just installed Plex on my Apple TV as well and wow is it good on there , beats using a clunky keyboard with the NUC to navigate to the media that I want to watch.

Just wondering if this is actually worth the upgrade from my ATV3. All I use it for is streaming from my PC using Plex, my only thought is that I wouldn't have to have plex connect running anymore.

But then I don't really need to upgrade or could just get a cheaper option like the Amazon Fire.

I was all ready to get one but now I'm about to click buy I'm wondering if it's actually worth it for me :p

My Roku is behaving a little strange in the past 6 months, YouTube apps takes 2 attempts before it loads, sometimes it freezes...but still sorta works. The introduction of Plex to ATV4 does means it is a no brainer as an upgrade when the Roku dies though.

:(

Cheers for the info. If its not got ITV or Ch4 player etc its just not worth it to us.

The difference now is that the apps can be developed by third parties, rather than relying on Apple developing products, which never happened for the UK market previously.

Just a heads-up that Apple has released tvOS 9.0.1 today.

It can be downloaded and updated by going to Settings, System, and Software Updates.

Tempted by the ATV4 but not sure it's worth it as I already have an ATV3 and it seems fine.

Can you use Siri to search the YouTube app via your voice? Might be a purchase for me if so.

Any cool apps out yet?

Got this last night had a play with it i'm impressed. A couple of things though; i notice all my purchased videos from my iphone can now be played on there as well as my iTunes library, how does this work? Steaming from phone? Otherwise that must be taking up a lot of storage. I notifce it runs fairly warm but i guess hats normal.

I've had mine for a week or so now.

Overall, worth the upgrade over the ATV3. Siri is excellent for iTunes and Netflix - shame it doesn't work with nowTV (I assume it's up to each developer to implement it but not sure). It's light on apps, but new stuff is coming out all the time, so it will prove to be a better device over time.

Airplay seems better and more solid too.

I think the API for Siri has been released, or will be soon, so should see it in more apps in the future. Will be excellent.

Siri does work once your inside the app if that makes sense. But yeah it would be great if it could come up when your searching from the home menu.

Had a play with one in store the other day, thought text entry was pretty clunky (for search etc) and there's currently no Siri integration with Plex (which is all I'd really use it for). Will wait for the rest of the big UK TV channels to release apps for it I think before taking the plunge.

Amazon Fire TV still doesn't have a 4OD app or NOWTV app despite the ease of releasing an existing Android app.

I'd not bank on any app being released until it was actually available.

it will. but the new appletv is easier. and faster. pick up the remote, and watch something.

the old one you either need to install plex on your iphone/ipad and airplay it over, or use the tutorial on the plex site (vaguely complex)

I had a look at this Apple tv today with no attention to buy one but I think I might get one now as the games seem good for the 5 year old. And I like the movies that are on iTunes too..

But I am trying to decide wether to get a 32GB or a 64GB. Movies are streamed are they? What would take up the storage?

Hope someone can help.. Another thing I am a bit annoyed about is. My iMac is upstairs if I want to airplay it to the apple TV I would need to go up and select what i want won't i?

I've had a Chromecast and used Plex on my phone, and found that it craps out all the time when trying to play higher quality files from my iMac.

I thought it might be a wifi thing, so I bought a Raspberry Pi B+ and installed RasPlex on it, which is loads better, but struggles with ultra-high res stuff (40 minute TV episodes at 5GB). This is operating over cat5 cable, albeit through homeplugs (which are pretty damn fast).

A friend who has been through the same motions as me has bought a new Apple TV and bought the Plex app for it, and reports zero issues streaming ultra-high res content over wi-fi of all things! I'm wondering if the new Apple TV has some sort of reasoning behind why this might be the case. If it does, I'm considering finding another use for the raspberry pi and getting an Apple TV instead. :)

Any thoughts?

K
