Coming from someone who likes to use his PS3 to watch Amazon Prime and Netflix, via a gigabit wired in lan, is there any value to owning an apple TV.. I know you can use the phone to send anything to the Apple TV device, but i'm not sure how well that works?

Is it true 1080p wireless streaming? does the iPhone just work as a remote ?

Trying to justify the benefits.

It has an extremely limited set of apps for the UK. Literally iPlayer, Now TV and Netflix is all we get. No Prime, 4oD, 5oD, iTV Player etc.

Airplay is OK for streaming the missing catch up services to the Apple TV, quite hit and miss in terms of quality and reliability.

GFs got a ATV 3rd gen whilst I've got a 1st Gen Chromecast, both got iPhones/iPads and a Macbook. Found the ATV restrictive and slow compared to the chromecast.

I got an 4th gen for christmas last year. A few months later my old plamsa tv died and my new tv has netflix, amazon etc built in. The apple tv hardly gets used now partly because the tvs apps also support 4k.

All my media is in iTunes, it's used on pretty much a daily basis. We'd struggle without it.

Tried it couldn't get on with it. I'm a fan of apple and have far too many of their devices in the house but I found AppleTV too limiting both on the apps available and formats it supports.

I find the Amazon Fire 4K to have best feature, spec, flexibility and apps. It's cheaper than Apple TV, you can watch Netflix and Amazon Prime, I watch YouTube a lot on it, and you can put Kodi on it.

I basically moved from Apple TV 2nd gen to Roku 3 to Amazon fire 4K.

As a 4th gen ATV owner, I'd say that unless you want/need to be able to play content bought or rented from iTunes, go for a Chromecast or Fire TV.

I use mine with Plex, Netflix, and ITunes content and for everything aside from iTunes it's inferior to other options (at least in the UK).

Have an ATV but not used it in months, and even in the time I've owned it it's probably only been used once or twice for films that weren't on Sky for renting

Pretty rubbish because of the limited apps as mentioned

You can have multiple Apple IDs on there/I have a UK one and a US one, so can access apps from both. I mainly use mine to watch NBC Sports (all Premier League games, including 3pm kick offs) and to Airplay BT Sport.

Is that legal, or does it have to be jailroken?

I second this, we like our ATV, but have an Amazon fire box, which has pretty much everything we could want on it.

The fourth gen is way way way better than the second and third gens. I've had them all. Gen 2 got used more once it was jailbroken, gen 3 got used with plex side loaded, gen 4 with the App Store is ace. I use mine every day for Plex and airplay then now and again for iplayer.

Anyone who used a second/third gen says my it was restrictive and for iTunes content, yes, but the fourth gen is completely different now.
