ok, my mac mini is getting a bit out dated now and due to a lack of vga or dvi ports im looking to side-grade to an apple TV and would like to sell the mini to accommodate for this.

now for the question. The usb port on the appleTV can it be used for an external hdd? i currently have a 500gig hdd for my music and movies. all recorded in h.264 so they have no trouble playing.

or on the other hand i could just buy a wireless card for the mini a new keyboard and mouse and hopefully when i run software update on it it gives me the option to run 720p as at the moment im trying to pipe it through hdmi at a non hdtv format and the picture is rubbish!

The USB cannot be used without using a hack (The USB port is meant for maintenance) that enables an external drive to be accessed.

Unfortunately we cannot discuss it on here due to the FAQ forbidding such talk :(

Legally, I would recommend getting a decent wireless card, and finding a good streaming program :)

The apple TV is really meant to be an iTunes extension to your TV, so you would first need to add all the files to iTunes then sync it with the apple TV device.

The main pain with this is that you have to keep your computer on all the time, or hack your apple tv to have enough space for all your movies/music.
