Apple TV

I *might* get it a long way down the line...
I can see a lot more use for it when Movie Rental is introduced but with my area's ADSL capped at around 0.5MB max, downloading HD movies will take "years"... plus, I need a New Mac (iMac / MacBook Pro / "something new) when it's updated next time around :)

Yeah, I can see the cap being problems for some people, luckily I don't have one which is good news. It's a great idea imo, I don't ever buy DVDs, only rent and it's so much easier to watch HD movies like that rather than forking out for a BluRay/HD-DVD player.

I have a Blu-Ray player (PS3), and have access to a HD PVR (Sky HD), but I'm always thinking "I wish I had access to more HD films, on demand"

If they can launch a decent service for the UK then I'll snap one up, I'll probably wait until they do launch and go spend my money on the Time Capsule ;)

The more I think about the Apple TV the less I want one (right now).

Remember how long it took Apple to get TV shows on iTunes in the UK?..

They're still lacking compared to the US store :(

I'll take a stab and say it'll be June/July for the UK rentals.

that is so much effort having to convert them just to watch it on apple tv. I have a few HD movies in avi and other formats, I use VLC to play them on my mac and connect the macbook to my hdtv and watch it that way.
If apple tv could stream other movie files somehow I'd definitely get it. Shame that Archos TV+ don't work with a mac.

I think I'll hang on a bit, to see if there is a set date for movie rentals, will be pretty pointless without them as that's the main reason I want one.

Until then, I'm ordering a Time Capsule.

Am considering getting the Apple TV. Have a PS3 and X360 but the cost of buying HD discs is shocking.
Also, had an online rental account - small monthly fee for a couple of discs at a time. But, the Post Offices where I am are either shut or have lines of people waiting for service.

I mention this because you need to get proof of postage when you send back your discs. Before Christmas when queues were at their worst I thought sod it, and posted them without getting Proof Of Postage. Three weeks later the company had still not received the discs. I reported them as lost and they sent me a form saying that unless I had proof of postage I would be billed £25 PER DISC. Fortunately they showed up a week later and I quickly closed my account.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why I would like an Apple TV.

I bought an apple TV when they first came out so I'm lucky that they are providing an update to make it useful again.

Hopefully by the time I get it setup again they'll have movie updates going. The only other feature that is still missing it the ability to stream movies from a NAS device rather than having to leave my computer on all the time.

are you able to stream non apple movie files over apple tv yet?

On the existing ones, if you have a USB pen drive thing you can install Perian on it and play pretty much anything. I wonder if that's still possible with the new update. I hope Sapphire browser works with the update too.

Not if you're running Leopard.

Any ideas on when the Movie rental will be working in the UK? only reason I want one as I connect the MP via VGA when I want to watch something on there.

Thanks :)
