Is there many rental films etc with subtitles yet for Apple TV? as I am thinking of getting one. Is this the only use for apple tv can I not put my Blu Ray onto the apple tv or DVDs but what about subtitles?
There are rental films and films to buy but:
a) the selection is small and mainstream (ie the latest Hollywood spouts out)
b) film to buy/rent are all english so you don't have the option to watch in French with subtitles for example which really sucks.
The AppleTV is discless. Apple does not support Blu ray for movies. Although SL can read/write data bluray supposedly.
The reason is that they want everyone to use their movie service instead.. however the range doesn't overlap my normal movie going interest No euro-native, no independent etc.
Also it's resolution is limited too. Not sure but I don't think it can do 1080 for example.
For example if iTune had Das Boot then you could only rent the English soundtrack version.
Now everyone knows the only way to watch Das Boot is to watch the German soundtrack with english subtitles otherwise you loose the emotional element from the superb acting and the original sound that's so claustrophobic. The english soundtrack is like the Simpsons-does-Das-Boot in comparison.
Often your local Tesco has the boxset or DVD on offer giving you everything for less money than the iTunes rental fee! My DVD collection of £3 films includes some real masterpieces.
