I hope they've improved the performance of crop/straightening of RAW files in this update.

Downloading via software update now... :)

What's the spec of your Mac?

My girlfriend just ordered Aperture for me and I hope to have some time running through it over the weekend, so I'll check out those functions.

I have a dual 2GHz Power Mac G5 with 2GB RAM, ATI9600 Pro.

I also have a 17" MacBook Pro. Intel Core Duo 2.16GHz, 2GB RAM, ATI X1600 (256MB). The graphics chip in the MacBook Pro is very fast... e.g. Doom 3 runs at 1680x1080 with all special effects turned on, and it's at least 50fps. Since Aperture relies on the GPU, this should make it faster, in theory.

The RAW files I work with are about 7.5MB each (Canon 30D), and Aperture is fine for most things, except rotation and cropping. I've got into the habbit of cropping/straightening as the last step of a workflow. Those two functions are especially slow if you've applied other effects/filters/adjustments to the image first.

Am I correct in thinking Aperture won't run on a Mac Mini?

Yes. Apple stated that the ATI 9600 is the lowest spec . graphics card they say will work with it. The G4 Mac Minis had a 9200, and the Intel Mac Minis have Intel Integrated... but it does support the Intel GMA 950... so try the demo.

Take a look at some of the mac blogs for patches to allow Aperture to run on a lower spec mac than it was intended for. Lots of them about.
