All of a sudden I'm often, but not always, getting a notification when I unlock my phone. This reads "Apple watch unlocked with this iPhone" and has a "Lock" button.

What on earth is this? It's super annoying and I don't even understand what's happening as the watch is unlocked directly via a PIN when I put it on my wrist so the phone shouldn't be unlocking it at all?

Are you getting that on your watch? I often see that on mine, notifying me that the watch has unlocked the phone.

Sometimes it happens when you raise the phone but don’t directly look at it and the lock button is in case this was accidental so you can simply press it to lock the phone again.

Edit - you can turn this off on the iPhone if it’s annoying you. It’s in Settings>Face ID and Passcode

I'm aware of the ability to unlock your phone with the watch but this is the other way round, I get the notification on my phone that it's unlocked the watch.

If you put your watch on and don't put the PIN in to unlock it, when you unlock your phone, it will unlock the watch.

Is this what you're seeing?

Yes, that's the badger, except I was getting it when my watch was unlocked and on my wrist. Guess it must have been a glitch as I'd not long put the watch on and unlocked it.

Why would you manually unlock the watch though, just let the phone do it for you. The only other reason for it to show is if you have a tattoo or something that is causing the watch to lock itself and the phone then unlocks it again.

I always do it manually because that’s my normal process in the morning. Up, into the bathroom to shower etc while my phone is still in the bedroom. Then I go into the shack, open the curtains, put my watch on, unlock it then go back into the bedroom where I dress and finally pick up my phone.

Exactly this. After showering and dressing I take the watch off the charger, put it on and tap in the PIN, simple.

Picking up my phone just to unlock the watch would take longer.

I've seen this too, but just ignore it. It gives you the option to keep your watch locked. Not sure what the use case there is though.
