Applecare for MacBook?

I remember a time, not so many years ago where one could buy Applecare relatively cheaply from eBay.

I'm looking to put it onto my 2016 MacBook but really don't want to have to pay £200 for it.

Is there any way to get it cheaper these days?
 
I thought applecare wasn't really needed in the UK due to the law about sale of goods and a six year time frame to make a claim.
I could be talking complete nonsense though. Would like some clarity on this and an answer to Feek's question above.

The 5 year thing is the limit you can bring a claim, not a right to a repair / replacement.

Generally speaking, you'd have a right fight on your hands getting apple to replace a failed hard drive that failed after 4 years for free as the law states that purchases should last a "reasonable" period of time with no actual date specified. With the current average failure rates etc. .on hard drives ,i doubt they'd just roll over and do it. With a 5 year apple care however, no questions would be asked and it would just be done.
 
Depends who you buy it from, consumer law applies to the retailer not the manufacturer. See my previous thread from 2014 about a 2011 15" MacBook Pro that had recurrent GPU issues before the repair extension.

Some parts wear out - your example of a (mechanical) hard drive they'd likely send you packing after 4 years, likewise a battery with high cycles. Solid solid state parts in a unamused laptop you'd have a good case under consumer law with an Apple Store. They were very fair with me, where I'd likely have needed to take court action with a more traditional high street retailer before you'd get listened to.
 
Good things come to those who wait. They don't appear on eBay very often at sensible prices but in the last couple of weeks a few have shown up. I ended up paying roughly half of what Apple charge for it. I'm happy with that.

How does it work? Is it a digital code you redeem?
 
Yes, exactly that. I was sent the physical package and I redeemed the code online.
 
it's just an extended warranty with some insurance built in. I don't insure what I can afford to replace, simple as.
 
Well, yours was surely up there considering how informing it was. Excess in Aus is typically 5k+ AUS$, so yeah. So one simple upfront payment to cover all the cars I hire over a year....And is far, far cheaper than the excessive amounts they charge at the counter for such things.

Is my prize a date with you ? I hope not :(
