AppleCare Protection Plan

Next month I'm emigrating to Gran Canaria (!!) and planning on buying a 24" iMac from the Spanish Apple store and have it delivered in advance of my arrival. So, as a new to Mac guy I have a couple of questions:

Is it worthwhile buying the rather expensive protection plan?
How reliable are iMac's and how likely are they to need service?
If they do break, how difficult are they to fix once out of warranty?

Any other advice would be great> :)

If you buy through the HE store you will get 3 years parts and labour cover for free along with 1 years phone support. You can then choose to pay £58 to extend the PHONE support to 3 years, but to be honest it's not worth it when you can use the internet for free anyway.

If you buy normally you will get 1 years parts and labour, and 3 months of phone support. You can then choose to pay £200+ to extend the coverage for the PARTS AND LABOUR to 3 years.

If you're willing to blag you can get a 14% discount from the Apple store (through the HE store) and you'll get ample cover from the basic HE coverage. Additionally, if you don't plan on keeping the iMac for 1 year+ you can just sell the iMac on and you're still covered (if you don't blag it)

I had a problem with my 24" iMac (DVD slot ate a CD) and Apple repaired it within 3 working days.. and that was pickup to re-delivery! I was very impressed, however, this has put me off the iMac. That's not to say I don't think they're reliable.. I had a previous iMac for a good 2 years and it was flawless.

They could be repaired by yourself, or a local Apple reseller, however, anything other than a bad set of RAM would prove costly, and EXPENSIVE to fix yourself. A good site for guides is http://www.ifixit.com, where you can follow step by steps on almost any part installation.

To answer your next question.. yes, the coverage is transferrable if you decide to sell in the future :o

That's great, thanks very much for info. I am planning on buying through HE having just finished Uni and still having student ID valid until September. Not sure whether I can buy under HE store from Spanish Apple store as a student of a Scottish Uni yet.

Visit the HE store and just select your spanish delivery address.

When you checkout it will change to the spanish HE store (I know because I did that once with the US store by accident).

Sounds great, will try that tomorrow from Uni.

As it happens, I just had live sale support chat with Apple agent:

Hi, my name is Mick. Welcome to Apple!
You: hello mick. mark here.
Mick: Hello, how can I help you?
You: i am spending this summer in gran canaria before returning to scotland next year to finish my degree. i would like to buy from he store and have shipped to canaries. can i do this from uk store?
Mick: I'm afraid that is not possible
Mick: When are you leaving?
You: in a few weeks
You: end of month
Mick: okay
Mick: Then you have plenty of time to have whatever you wish to order delivered in the uk before you leave
Mick: you can simply bring it with you
You: the reason i hoped to have delivered to canaries is slightly prohibitive shipping costs. canaries part of eu but shipping more expensive for larger insured items
You: would the spanish apple store allow me he discount as uk student?
Mick: no
Mick: what are you looking to order?
You: imac 24" 2.8
You: rather large and heavy
Mick: It's quite large but not too heavy
Mick: Having it delivered to the uk and bringing it with you is your only optoin I'm afraid
You: ok. that's great. thanks mick for your help

So apple agent says I can't order through HE and have delivered to Spain. Wouldn't mind ordering here but it'll cost me best part of £100 to ship insured to Canaries.

Hi,

I did this with my HE online order and according to the warranty on Apple site I only have 1 year parts and labour. Gutted as I should have got it for £58 quid at the time I bought my MBP.

Have you actually done this with a recent order and checked your warranty status online?

rp2000, I bought my Macbook Pro from the HE store along with the additional warranty and have experienced the same as you when I checked my warranty online. However if you call Apple, a representative should confirm that you have a 3 years warranty.

Even with the fully paid-for AppleCare, it doesn't show as being three years on the checker.

But when I went into a Repair Centre, they looked up the serial and saw it was covered for 3 years. Got to repairing it without question.

I see, just to clarify I DIDN'T pay the £58 (As I read here that even without it you get 3 years coverage), whereas you imply you paid it and the checker was wrong.

Anyway, It's only about 3 months old and not broken yet :)
