My PC has semi died and I'm thinking this is the perfect time to switch.

Anyway, if I buy a Mac from a 'popular' high street store, can I then buy the applecare online?

Yes you can, either online from Apple or over the phone.

Edit -

Or just phone up and blag the HE discount from Apple, that way you get 3 years of hardware warranty as standard :)

Sweet, My impulsive side is wanting to buy a 20 inch 2.4 Ghz tomorrow with a free Office student edition thrown in. Its £20 more than with HE discount, but unless I get it while I'm feeling impulsive I never will.

That's a pretty good deal then as the discount is normally around 14% :)

Don't forget to order some extra RAM though as the 1Gb standard is a bit stingy, especially in Leopard and with the prices as good as they are at the moment you can pick up 4Gb pretty cheaply.

As I recall you get one years AppleCare thrown in with a new Mac, and in 12 months time they ring you up asking if you want to extend it. Just summat to keep in mind. The Office deal isn't bad, but its still PowerPC code and doesn't run as quickly as it should. That is being picky though.

I've you're feeling impulsive and can afford it, go for it. Its easier to recommend Macs these days as if you really hate OSX you can either take it back or just install Windows on it.

Oh, and taking it to 2GB RAM is a good idea as said.
