Apple's January 27th Event

Same here really, a lot of people complain regarding disruption while listening to last.fm etc but I only ever listen to my own music on the go, and that is all on my iPod classic. :)

Not really. I've never needed my iPhone (or my iPod Touch when I had one) to multi task. It's quick enough opening applications that multi tasking has never been a requirement.
It's quite the PITA to have to leave your web browser, go back to the homescreen and open your IM tool, or your twitter client, on a device with this size screen there is no good reason to not allow apps to run concurrently and overlay or have some screen sharing arrangement.

I see where you're coming from but Safari always opens on your last location so it isn't a major PITA :p

How long does it take for safari to open up each time?

I regularly have two or three programs running on my phone, it doesn't slow the phone down and makes thinks a lot easier. For example if i'm looking at some photos or the web and I get a text I just "x" out of whatever I am in (including games) and read/reply to the text then go straight back into the game/website or photos (literally less than a second). I can save things in the background for later if I need them instantly or I can email website addresses etc really easily.

I also regularly have things like google maps on in the background when i'm doing something else, like looking up an address on the web or the like.

On a phone it isn't essential no, but it is very useful. On a bigger device it is essential.

I want one. Mostly because I was going to buy a Kindle. eBooks especially in colour are going to be a real boon. Should be great for carrying round my D&D and WFRP rule books for gaming sessions (well if there is a way to convert PDF to ePub)

No flash. No big deal. I've had an iPhone since the 2G days and it hasn't been a problem. I get why Apple don't want it on there and I get why it annoys some people but it doesn't bother me...

No multitasking? Starting to get a bit silly but having experience with what happens with multi-tasking on Windows Mobile I'll wait until Apple solves that little problem. I'm sure by OS 4 it will be sorted.

Don't need a camera on an iPad but again I can see how it would annoy some people.

An eBook reader than plays movies, runs iPhone apps as well as dedicated apps, plays games with good graphics and frame rates, runs freakin' iWork? I'll buy it but not the overpriced 3G version. I'll get a Wifi one and a MiFi.

I'm also wondering where the speakers are. The demo showed lots of loud sound but if the audio is anything like that on an iPod Touch then it'll be absolute pony.

It can't multi-task?

Honestly i'm not here to just rain on the parade or intentionally upset the apple fans... but i honestly cant see the point. It's an iPod Touch. With a book store.

If they'd released a tablet with a cut down verion of Snow Leopard for a higher price i'd have been much more interested... but to leave the gimmicky iPhone OS on it is just lazy in my opinion. It's a large enough screen to allow a regular page of any normal program (spreadsheets/word processors/web browsers) plus a decent sized keyboard but instead it is, quite literally, a big iPod.

Also, they could have named it The Apple Pad or something. The whole iCharade is getting boring :(

(I'm not writing it off as a useless bit of kit. I wouldn't mind owning one once my iPod touch reaches it's later end of life... i just found it incredibly dissapointing and think they haven't fully focused it's potential.)

Too easy ?, I think you'll find the opposite is the case

Both Sims and the sim contacts on a iphone would not stand up to be inserted / ejected several times a day.

If they did as you suggest every iphone out there would break when used this way, not good for apple

This is 100% nonsense. I regularly swap my work SIM in and out of devices, usually half a dozen times a day. It's suffered no damage. SIM cards were designed to be swapped between devices.

It's a right PITA when using Spotify. Can't even reply to a text without the music stopping. :(

See i'm waiting for the colour e-ink screens to come out. There are a couple on the horizon I think, as well as bendy screens and book style readers (twin screens).

The idea that you would be closing and reopening your book or worse yet browser with 20 tabs every time you want to check your email or paste something you just came across to a document because Apple still has that "if we allow it to multitask there will be a program open somewhere in background draining battery and slowing down the experience" paranoia is just stupid. If you're so darn psycho about progs in background then just make a taskbar somewhere with progs still active flashing icon every now and then.

I think its just their excuse for not being able to deliver better battery life and/or hardware.

It would be insult to injury that if you closed iBooks to do something it didnt remember what book/page you were on when you reopened the app...

ps3ud0

Well having had the night to digest the iPad, I am stoked.

Not that that statement will shock anyone, but it's finally here.

How about we all shut up about it for a while though, the rumors and conjecture have been overwhelming!

I hope we don't have countless threads about it, so Feek & Justin get em' all merged haha.

Back to the iPad, naturally I'm eager to purchase one and of course it'll be the 64GB / 3G model! ;)

Playing some of the iPhone games are going to be amazing on it.

Of course it will, thats a huge part of the development ethos that they try and teach you when developing apps for the iphone/pod/pad, they wouldn't go and not implement it themselves.

I also had another thought.

Imagine your family is round on a Sunday afternoon and you want a game of Monopoly or Scrabble. Screw digging the box out and setting everything up, just use the Monopoly and Scrabble available on the App Store, set it to full screen, and plonk it down in the middle! Brilliant!

The more I think about it the more I want one. :D

I'de love to live a day as you.. What's it like being that helpless against the Apple machine?

:p
