Apple's March 21st 2016 event

9.7 arrived:

Waitrose had it since yesterday but didn't scan it in correctly so only got it this afternoon after customer support found.

What cases are people using on their 9.7" iPad Pro? I'll be damned if I'm buying the Apple Smart cover. On my Air 2 I had a non-genuine Smart style cover which was great, but it seems at the moment suppliers are still awaiting their shipments from Asia on the various non-genuine options.

I lashed out on both the cover and silicone case and impressed by both of them.

Mine arrived yesterday - upgraded from an Air.

First thing that hits me is it seems a lot thinner than the Air and a lot more solid (thanks to the laminated screen). Screen is also less reflective so that's nice. Can't really say I'm a fan of true tone.. but I'll try it a little longer and see how I feel. Obviously it's a lot snappier than my Air. Before, I could tell if I'd left certain apps open (Logitech Harmony for example), as it would lag ever so slightly. Now it's buttery smooth regardless of what I'm doing. Noice.

The extra speakers are nice. No more muted sound when I'm watching/listening to stuff in bed, in portrait mode.

Camera is pretty much 6s quality, while I clearly don't use it when I'm out and about like a **** it IS is huge improvement over the Air (both vids and pics).

One weird thing I have noticed - which I think did also happen with my Air (so it might just be my WiFi), is that when it comes out of sleep, it takes a few seconds to reconnect to the WiFi. So if I say "Hey Siri" it'll say there's no internet connection, then a few seconds later it'll say "I'm listening...". I also tested "Find my iPad" earlier and it was showing offline and the test noise didn't come through until about 20 minutes later...!

Really can't see why people are so up in arms over 2 GB of RAM. I guess it does look like you're being short changed, but I'm pretty confident I'm not going to encounter any scenarios where an extra 2 GB is going to make any difference. Surely the 12" comes with 4 GB because it's got 50% more pixels to push and is aimed more at picture/movie editing?! <cue cries of "fanboy"> :o

Charging the Pencil was interesting.. it didn't fit inside the iPad Lightning port very smoothly.. felt like it was scraping as i poked it in (fnar), other than that - works as expected. Quite impressed (but ever so slightly paranoid that long term use is going to end up scratching the screen?!)

Ram I think its mostly just that its the pro edition that comes with the same amount of ram as the base version. Also think regardless off size it should handle the same tasks the 13" does mostly cause they have the same SoC/power and the price isn't all that different.

They are not up in arms over 2GB, I am not. I'm bothered that the increase in specs from October 2014 to March 2016 didn't justify a price increase. It's a stealth price hike by adding the pro name.

Do you think there will be an ipad air 3 in september? How can there be when the specs gaps will be so close. If they had released an Air 3 everything in the Pro would have happened anyway, without the price increase. They have nicely hid that by having no overlap with the Air 2 in sizes so comparisons are harder to make. So the only comparison I can make is

£499 for a 32gb Pro or 64gb Air 2 for £429 better still refurb for £359. I think the pro makes sense in 12.9 but for the smaller version it's nothing but a hidden price increase as there's not enough between the Air2 and it to seperate the ranges.

Because it's a "pro" divice and the more ram the more future proof the device will be. Having web pages reload every time you change tabs is so frustrating. Every device Apple has released worked fine when released. Come back in 2-3 years and let me know how that 2gb ram is working out. It would cost them almost nothing to add in 4gb instead of 2gb and the power usage wouldn't suffer. It's just cheaping out because they can.

I love apple products and have 2 iPads, a MacBook Pro and an iPhone but some of the decisions they make are just a slap in the face.

Exactly. It has to work great when you buy it. It's not a surprise.
It's all about whether it will work flawless next year, with next ios, with maybe more options for multitasking (and functions not available just because it's not 4GB)....and it costs more on the start.

My impressions on ipad pro 9.7 are similar to other reviews online.

Coming from air1 it's big upgrade.
When I compare next to each other reduced reflections on the screen are amazing. Quite significant difference.
Colours on two photos compared next to each other also show visible advantage of the pro.

Speed on Safari makes web browsing a lot more enjoyable. Swiftkey slides up very quickly, while on air normally it takes 1-2s (and sometimes even longer lagging terribly). It's sad that third party keyboard on a 2016 system requires so much power from the device...Must be complicated thing:eek:

Tabs don't refresh on pro due to memory, even though I had already 1 or 2 situations when they did, maybe I had more apps opened at the time? not sure. However speed of the tablet makes reloading very quick.

Speed of loading web page is lightning fast, it's really really fun to use it for internet browsing with those kind of speeds, impressed by this.

Charging from 7-100% took me about 3.5hrs , so similar to previous ipads.

Apple SIM, I didn't have enough information before but it comes out that when you buy Ipad from a carrier, apple sim will be domestically locked to this carrier. So in my case I bought it from o2 and I won't see offers from EE. Just to clarify, all ipads are unclocked (simlock) just apple sim is locked if you buy ipad from a carrier. I can still use additional nano sim from EE.

Overall I'm happy with it, as an upgrade to air1.

It's not the rendering of webpages that can be a bit slow, it's the loading of them. Having pages that are very large reload is annoying. Like I said, it's probably not going to be an issue for a year or more but it will become a problem a lot quicker than it would with 4gb.

It's OK I'm sure they'll release a 4gb version soon in 12 months or whenever apple activate their built in redunancy feature in the existing model. Worry not!

Thats why I am holding off upgrading from my Air.

I already got stung buying the iPad 3 on release then the newer model came out months later.

The problem is that every 6 months a new ipad will come out and it will have a spec bump of some sort. You have to accept that your device will not be cutting edge after a maximum of a year. I feel more for the people who buy apple laptops and desktops just before a major refresh because they really do change quite a lot sometimes.

Yeah I caved in and just got an 64gb Air 2 from refurb for £359. I didn't fancy the extra cost of the pro for a slight speed increase and still 2gb ram. I can't see how they would release an Air 3 for instance in September and not be too close in specs to the Pro. Right now we have no idea if there will be a pro line up only or both. I can't see how there will be both with the gap between them being so small.

If an Air 3 comes out in Sept, I will pass the Air 2 to the Mrs and get that, if it's enough of a bump.

Hmm I've noticed that my 9" Pro is starting to act a bit strange with my WiFi. There seems to be a massive lag between instant messengers, to the point where the iPad will be totally out of sync and suddenly pop up "new" messages, which i read and responded to several minutes ago. Also making/receiving calls from my iPad (via my iPhone) seems to be failing too. They're all on the same WiFi network at home. Wondering if the fact that i restored a backup (iPad Air) may have caused something weird?

Will give it a few more days to settle i guess :S

How do you find the case? Does it add too much thickness? Worth the cash?

If feels quite nice, better than the leather one for the original air. Looks as tough it offers better protection and not much heavier, maybe another 100gms.

The raised edge:

Makes it around 1cm thick:

The cover folds right back and does stay in place.

I don't have a problem holding it in one hand. Shame they didn't make it in one piece and less expensive but it you are after complete protection then you won't be disappointed.

Yeah, quite expensive:/ as above it sits well, seems tough and magnets are quite strong, however I preferred leather feel in touch rather than rubbery.
