I've just been playing with this all morning, and I've got to say, I'm pretty blown away by it.
It's such a simple, but effective little tool for producing great little videos to relive captured media stored in forgotten areas of your device.
I know pretty much nothing about video editing, it's been on my to do list for ages to try and get to grips with Adobe Premier and put together some of my phone vids, but I just never seem to find the time or it seems overwhelming to deal with all the crazy settings.
At first I found it difficult to figure out how to create my own memories from media that I specifically pick, as opposed to the automatically generated ones that they suggest, but once I'd sussed that I was able to put together a 2.30 minute video comprised of about 40 clips I took from a family event.
Most clips were 15 seconds or less, with some being a couple of minutes.
Whatever way it managed to extract the bits it wanted for this particular 'Memory' video, it did a great job highlighting some great parts.
The transitions in time to the music was spot on.
Of course, I realise how incredibly limited it is as well. I'm sure there's tons of great content in those 40 clips that hasn't been included in the 2 min 30 sec final video, of course you've got a limited amount of music to choose from and you can't pic what part from each clip you've selected to be in it gets use. But my goodness, the results aren't half bad for the effort you have to put in.
When I showed the clip to the key people in the video it made them tear up, it was so emotional. (Happy tears)
If I hadn't used that feature in iOS 10, chances are those clips would have been forgotten forever on my to do list and that would be it. But instead something tangible and emotive was actually created, even if it wasn't top quality pro-editing that's going to win any Oscars.
I think that feature has so much promise. I hope they continue to work on it and make it more powerful. It really makes quite an exciting and potentially complicated task very accessible, quick and easy to produce for pretty much any iPhone user.
