I have been using my pc fine for months. Last week I was on MSN and it kept shutting its self off and I had to open the msn applicaton again.

Other applications are now doing this, My virus scan will not complete a full scan and crashes, games and almost anything other then the web?

Has anyone go any ideas why the applications are closing them selves as it is driving me mad..

System not clocked and if left downloading is fine and running windows xp pro sp2 and seem stable apart from apps crashing.

Hi thanks for tip, have tried to restart in safe mode but no longer gives me the option just brings up sellect opperating system and all that is listed is my windows xp.

I have run a adware program and found some rubbish so removed them. I have tried to scan for virus's but application closes down after around 20 seconds.

I also tried pc cillin house call but it scans all drives and when it is just about to publish results internet window closes????

Just been able to run a scan by clicksing on C: windows and scan folder and that was clear??

anyone any more ideas at this is causing be big problems now?

Are you pressing the F8 key before Windows starts?

Thought the key was F5 that is what I have used in the past but will give the F* a go just to make sure.

Up date I have downloaded a free trial of NOD32 and that found to trojans but dont think it would cause apps to close or could that be problem?

Possibly, I can't really be certian. The problem might be that you just have reinstall the applications that are not working properly.

Either that - try restoring your computer to a time earlier then when all the problems started...

I did a scan with NOD32 and that picked up around 6 trojans that my Mcafee missed.

I have tried to do a restall 3 times now to different dates but when the pc restarts it says was unable to restope PC to previous date no changes have been made.

I have tried the re install of MSN and that keeps crashing, although I was able to play football manager lastnight with out it crashing after 20 seconts (one plus).

Would anyone know why the restall wont work and why the apps keep crashing?

i agree with the poster above. you need to do a clean reinstall.

back up all your docs and do a clean install. and when asked if you want to quick format or full format, choose the full format.

O guys thanks for the info will re install but regarding thr trojans, I have a firewall and virus scanner and hey have not picked them up. Is there anything i can do to reduce amount of threats this way.

I also I have been thinking about the New Vista oem home pro version

I use my pc for encoding dvds's via Nero, also some gaming like SOF2 and older games.

I am going to buy the NOd32 after trial finishes as Mcafee is slower and does not pick up Trojans.

first off disable system restore

then do an updated nod32 scan, and get the ewido antivirus along with windows defender run fully updated scans on all 3
if it doesn't work then, then you'd might as well format

If you don't want to reinstall then you could follow the advice at CastleCops, a highly respected site, that among other things provides one-on-one help with disinfection of user's PC's. If you want to help yourself instead, then the link below is a good place to start

To be honest though, you're best course of action is to wipe and start again. Before you do though make sure you've downloaded all the anti-malware software you need. That way you can install XP without it being connected to Internet. After installation, install your prefered Firewall, AV and Anti Spyware software, then go online and get all the Microsoft Updates.

If you're looking for an effective all in one solution, then I can highly recommend Kaspersky Internet Security 6. Alongside NOD32 it's AV engine is one of the most effective in the industry. I managed to pick up a license for the suite for only £14 from a well known aution site, which represents excellent value for money.
