Virtual Dub - helped me big time to make a timelapse
Irfanview - helped me big time to batch rename the pics for loops in my timelapse above.
Hitman Pro - Found about 3000 pieces of malware on my comp and helped to remove most of the ones that others couldn't.

7zip. compresses and decompresses loads of formats, and the 7z files is makes are really small for when you need to back stuff up.

Nero. good for backing up data

knoppix live cd- good for recovering data from non-bootable systems, and re-partitioning amounst other things

testdisk -undeletes accidentatly deleted partitions

i forgot to load my sata driver one time on an xp install and had my usb2 drive plugged in, was on the phone to the mrs, and i pressed L to remove all partitions

my heart stopped when i realised i'd just deleted my whole backup drive (250gb!)

this got it back in about 5 seconds  donated £50 straight after

Not saved my life but certainly saved me getting fired.

ERD Commander

While doing some maintenance work on our main DB server I realised we had left an old version of Citrix installed on the machine, so thought it would be wise to get rid of it while I had the chance.

What Citrix fail to tell you it is not (reasonably) possible uninstall citrix and it writes itself into the windows kernel, so 20 mins later I had a machine with all our company data with a blue screen as it booted.

another 20 mins with ERD commander and I had the db's copied off accross the network and the machine on it's way re-installing.

Life was suddenly good again :)

Never heard of this one before. I'll give it a try.
