Sorry, if this is covered before and I'm sure it was but I would apply a thin layer of AS5 over the whole surface of my Q9550 and duel core CPUs.

The AS instructions show only a line of AS5 going along the CPU.

I know its a bit of a silly question when the instructions TELL you how, but,...what have you found to be the best method.

A rice grain sized line down the middle of the cpu. Too much and you will have poor temps. Too little and you will have poor temps. Make sure that the HSF and cpu are cleaned prior to instalation.

Thanks Matt, yes I've use Isppropyl A to clean, so let me get this right, a line down or across depending on the CPU is the correct way.
Thanks again.

I usually spread it out with my finger first over the top of the heatspreader where the HSF will make contact, has worked well for me and seems a cleaner way to do it...

Rice sized bit used to be what I did but I found temps to be not quite as good.

On the CPU heatspreader I spread a thin layer out, I tend to also do the same on the HSF also, don't use too much AS but it works very well.

Edit: Other people here tend to spread it out with a thin piece of card etc.

My way of doing it is to get some and apply it to my heatsink and spread it about to get into all the tiny holes. I then get a biut of plastic and wipe it off the heatsink so only a very small amount is left. Then i put a small line on the CPU and install the heatsink.

I do this becuase my arctic freezer 7 has a very uneven bottom and its very rough so to save me from lapping it(which is tricky on this type of cooler) i do it this way.

Usually apply a thin layer in the middle and spread it around the CPU, do the same with the heatsink.
But you should be able to find specific instructions from your CPU cooler's website/booklet?

I've always just done mine according to the instructions and have always had really good temperatures.

25C idle & about 35-38C under 100% load (for about an hour) ;)

E6600 with a Scythe Ninja

I've also done a few quad cores and other higher powered dual cores and they've all been perfect when done according to the instructions.
