Applying a pattern overlay as a gradient ? Photoshop CS

Am i missing something very simple ?

I have created pattern overlays to form diagonal/horizontal/vertical lines and grids.

What i want is to use these as gradient overlays.

I.e black lines or grids ( with transparent backgrounds) fading from left to right , top to bottom etc..

Can anyone help me ?

You could try putting the patten you want in a new layer then go into quick mask mode (Q) Do the gradient you want using the gradient fill tool then press (Q) again to come out of quickmask mode and hit delete.
