Applying for new jobs, question about references

Generally, a new employer, when taking up references if they are considering taking somebody on will speak to at least one of the people you put down as a reference, in this case I've put down my current employer and my previous one.

As it's been at least 3 years since I've had anythng to do with my previous emplooyer would I be better off phoning them and asking if they will still give me a reference ?

I wasn't sacked from them thankfully, I just had to go as my temporary contract I had with them had ended and there wadn't enpugh work to keep me on.
 
Since I think it's illegal to refuse to give a reference and to give a bad reference then it should be fine.
A courtesy call would go a long way though... Then they might say nicer things :)

Yeah think I'll do that tomorrow, I've sent them some business there way since I've been working where I am now as we don't sell the big old commercial stuff that they did.
 
it's not illegal to give a bad reference afaik but most places will not do it because of the risk of legal recriminations

It's not illegal to give a bad reference but normally most prospective employers use the question "would you hire him /her again" obviously if the answer is no then that is normally enough to put your new potential employer off.

It's like the unwritten code for this guy's a bum :D
 
I've got a similar dillema in that I've only ever worked for one company (two different positions), and the idea of putting my second reference down as someone from before then doesn't really appeal to me. It's 5 years since I graduated so I doubt my tutor even remembers me, and I don't think prospective employers will be overly enthused by a reference from a school teacher.

Company policy dictates that references must be provided by the HR department, which also rules out the possibility of getting the two relevant line-managers to do it. Fortunately I know my former one quite well so I may simply give my first(current) ref as HR and have him as the secondary one.
