Hi,

Recently made a modest upgrade from my E6300 C2D to a Q6600.

What is the correct way to apply AS5 paste to the Quad?.

Thanks.

There is a guide for this on the Arctic Cooling website. I think it says a line down the CPU through the text, I'll see if I can find it.

^There's your answer!

Cheers guys, I should have looked there first. Doh!!.

Annoying thing is I had AS5 lying around here somewhere but can't find it anywhere. I've got a tube of Thermaltake stuff here but would rather use AS5 as it's bound to be better quality. Will need to have a further rake around for it. :p

Found my AS5 and swapped out my E6300 for the Quad. First impressions - Whole system feels much more "snappy". Running at stock its sat at @24-25 deg C on each core according to Speedfan. Q6600 has been lapped and has a VID of 1.3000v. Using an Arctic Cooler 7 Pro.

Have always used Coretemp up till now but having a browse through the forums for Q6600 threads I came across THIS thread which states :-

Coretemp and Realtemp wrongly assume TJmax is 100°C, while Speedfan correctly sets 90°C for the Q6600

That correct?.

No one really knows as Intel don't tell.
But the general consensus is that it is 90, so you can set this in coretemp if you like or just take ten degrees off the temp it displays.

to some extent I wouldn't worry about temps

my Q6600 is at 1.575V (Bios) - 1.52 actual - on AIR

at 3.56 gig - run small prime and wow does it get hot - 81C after about 10 minutes or so

but under general usage you never get anywhere near that - it idles at 48C and in most games etc doesn't get over about 65C

and its stable - don't get any crashes etc - I used to be relucantant to run at such high voltages, but I thought I'd run the Q6600 into the ground before I upgrade sometime - but that was 7 months ago and its still going strong, no problems whatsovere

I'm hoping for another 12 months :)

as of Sept I'll have had my P5B mobo for 4 years - longest I've ever had a mobo

I just changed from AS5 to MX3 on my core i7 @ 4ghz and during game play i seen 4-5C less temps on all 4 cores i would go for MX3 if you can't find the AS5 and have to buy a new thermal paste (it's instant cure as well).

It also spreads a bit better so you can use it more efficiently I think. AS5 isn't the easiest to apply and get right every time.
