Applying thermal paste

Looking at the arctic silver website it looks as if for CPUs with the large heat spreaders (ie. Conroe) you just put a small blob of paste in the middle and shove the heatsink on it.

Is that right? Is it the best way to do it?

Just doesnt seem like it would spread it very well.
 
There is a lot of pressure when you secure the HSF so that does an excellent job of spreading the thermal paste out. You just have to make sure you don't put too much on.

should the thermal paste be applied to the cpu, gpu, chipset etc or the fan block or waterblock that it being placed on it.

Also what is recommended for spreading thermal paste?

I normall apply it to the chip itself, rather than the HSF/Water block etc. Also to spreadit you can either do as SiriusB says, or use a credit card, or the method I prefer is to place my hand inside a plastic freezer bag, and spread the thermal paste with my finger to get a really even and thin layer.

Lighter petrol worked every time for me, just leave it a few minutes after cleaning to ensure it has all evapourated
