Should I use a pea sized amount in the centre or cover the whole area?

Seems to be a lot of discussion about which is most effective.

Also, does anybody know if the Zalman CNPS9900 Max comes with it pre-applied? I know my Arctic Cooler did.

I just go for whatever the artic silver 5 manual says

According to this it is a vertical line. Think I'll go with that.
