Hello,

I just wondering if any of yous know much about apprenticeships.

The reasoning is that I finish school in July next year and I am getting paranoid about my future, so I wont to have a good plan.

What I am wondering is if you do a apprenticeship and fully complete it, do you get a qualification for the job and can start work as what ever your apprenticeship was?

Basically I was looking at taking one in either Electrical engineering or Aerospace engineering. I had a quick look on the Apprenticeships website, and all I could find is that when you've completed the course you come out as either a electrical engineering technician , or a Aerospace engineering technician, which do more or less the same jobs but get paid 2/3 as-much.

So are they separate apprenticeship courses for the full job and the technician?
So for example if I did a apprenticeship in the electrical engineering , would I come out as a fully qualified one or just the technician.
I don’t understand at all :S

And if you have info that you think maybe helpful , please say :)

Many thanks,
Ripped :D

Firstly, I'm currently undertaking a process and control apprenticeship with a steel manufacture, so I assume that a large proportion of the information I'm about to give may or may not be reverlent in the aeronautical industry.

OK, In my apprenticeship and also in the fords system, you get multiple qualifications. For example ill list my projected list of qualifications:
Year 1= year 1 of 2 BTEC National Certificate In electrical and Electronic Engineering
= NVQ level 2 in performing engineering operations.
= City and guilds in basic steel making

Year 2 = year 2of 2 BTEC National Certificate in electrical engineering
= NVQ level 3 in Electrical engineering with process control optional extras
= plus lots of in house courses

Year 3 and 4 are HNC with the NVQ

All qualifications you get both in college and in house can be used else where, most companies love apprentices due to the level of experience and experience of documentation/ health and safety.

So are they separate apprenticeship courses for the full job and the technician?

For the title of engineer in most companies you need the a degree in that subject, but even if you have a degree most companies would only employee you as a graduate till you are time served, in other words you cant enter a industrial company as a engineer straight of the bat, you need to have experience by the bucket load, hence why those jobs are very well paid.
Also if you show particular skill and capability in both physical and theory sides of the apprenticeship, most companies will offer to sponsor you through a university course.

apply for ones with big companys and you will be on the road to sucess

the other option is to go through college/training centre and try to find your own sponsor. doesnt work that well for everyone because many companys will laugh you away when you ask them to take you on for your level3

to get the title of engineer you would have to continue education after your apprenticeship is over. most common way to do this is part time HNC/HNDs and then onwards. many companys allow and encourage it

siemens run a big engineering apprenticeship scheme up your way.

This might help.

I'm doing the BTEC National Diploma in Electrical Engineering, and after that I can either enter work as at technician level or go onto higher education such as HNC/HNDs at engineering.

Cheers everyone , i understand a bit more now.

So basically the apprenticeship would get me to the technision level , and further education will get me to the engineer level?

Thanks,

Ripped ;)

There are apprentices in loads if jobs. All will have official qualifications but it depends which apprenticeship you do. They are an amazing alternative than getting an average degree.
Companies have spent 10's of thousands on you and so in done industries you will be looked after and fast tracked afterwards.

Google and visit every large company you can and see what their apprentaships offer.

Also some companies have sponsored degrees run in partnership with the universitys, these are well worth a look as well.

I have a Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, After you finish your apprenteship your company (if you are good) will like to keep you on, but once it has finished you dont have to accept and you are free to find any other company you would like because you have the experience.

Word of warning though they do make apprentices work OTT imo.

Once you get a Higher National Certificate you can do two things (on your own ofc) You can do a foundation degree or join university straight into the second year.
