Hi all, I have an old machine running windows xp pro sp3 up to date with all patches which has been running great the past month. I have noticed just randomly that the hard drive is ticking over for no reason what so ever and when I have looked in task manager, I have 2 exe files using a lot of memeory then 10 minutes later they dont.
The exe files I am on about are wuauclt.exe and this is using 119,368k and svchost.exe and this is using 117,052k the spec of this machine is amd athlon xp 1.67ghz and 512mb ram. Now, when those applications use a lot of power, the commit charge in task manager goes from 500-600m/1248m to 1007m/1248m. Also, just to let you know, I am using nod32 smart secuirty and this is up to date. I have run a smart scan and it has found 0 problems and have also run malwarebytes full scan which found 0 problems.
Also I put in the xp disc and when to run and put command in sfc / scannow.
I hope someone can help I hope I really dont need to reformat.

I'm not really sure what the problem is. If they were consistently using huge amounts of RAM i'd understand, but I imagine they're just doing their job and going back to idle. If it's a big bother for you though, try disabling automatic updates to deal with wuauclt.exe, then just update manually every few days. As for svchost.exe, you could try to identify what service it's running and then disable it if it's not important.
