Personally i think it's a heap of ****, but as a member of the IT department, i have to look into it. I've been advised by someone that there is a virus due to strike on 1st April, yes, April Fools Day. Has anyone heard about this as i've heard nothing. Also, i remember seeing a website a while ago, which listed the latest known virus's (eh?) etc etc, anyone know of it?

Even if there was, what pro-active tasks would you do outside of your normal routine?

Assuming zero information of the attackers source code and angle of attack, pretty much nothing, such is the life of re-active AV.

You can lookup current known virri and thier variants on any of the big name sites, Sophos, Nod32 etc etc

i heard its this one

people who get viruses should be shot

fixed.

No end of problems at my work place due to idiots opening anything and everything and installing whatever they feel like without thinking. It now means that all zip/rar files are quarantined automatically in the server and most things, like windows, are scheduled to run meaning I can't decide which updates to install

Slightly off-top, but Conficker is going to be one hell of a BOTNET ;)

Millions of computers infected according to Symantec, imagine the huge DDoS they could launch.

And so you should. The Conficker worm is certainly not a joke. Over 10 million PCs infected worldwide in January, god knows what that figure is like now.

Managed to get it on dad's laptop, literally just connected to the internet and bang, you're now the proud owner of one conficker virus. Well, according to avast anyways. Think it's all cleaned up now, least both Avast and the Nod32 online scanner say so anyways. Are there any telltale signs that a computer is infected other than the april first thing?

people with there head screwed on have nothing to fear
as said its the people that open/click and do everything there told to do in emails etc that are the one spreading this stuff

Wouldn't be so sure about that, as I said above I literally just received it free in the post. Was just cruising around here on OCUK at the time and not any dodgey sites (it was Dad's laptop after all).
