Hey guys, I am about to turn 16 and I really wanted to get a scooter, but looking around the forums the Aprilia has been mentioned quite a lot and the Derbi GPR.
However I liked the Aprilia better, what I wanted to know is if its legal for me to drive at 16y/o with a CBT.
Does it have gears? lol, yeh I'm a noob to bikes.
What sort of price am I looking at, if you mention a price range, could you mention the age of the bike aswell.
Thanks

RS50 definitely! and as cheap as possible because they are easy-peasy to fix and very little to go wrong with them.

Perfectly legal if they are restricted to 37mph or whatever it is, which negates the point of having one completely.

If you don't want a moped you pretty much have two choiced. An Aprillia RS50 or a Yamahe DT50. There's also the Honda Mt50 but there aren't many of those around.

Legally, they're all restricted to 27mph which is dangerous. I had a DT50 when I turned 16 and I got it derestricted as soon as I could. It could hit 55mph with a tailwind which was nice!!

Most of the 50cc scooters will go faster than a DT50 or RS50 when derestricted but if you intend to move onto bigger bikes, screw the scooters and dget a proper shape bike. They may not go that fast but you'll learn the basics of handling a proper bike.

A lot of people will suggest you wait til you're 17 and get a 125. Don't listen to them. The year you have on a 50cc will be invaluable experience to you as a biker. Learning to integrate with other road traffic on something with the power of a chicken's fart takes skill and it will teach you a lot. Make the most of it and good luck buddy :)

Don't really see the point in RS50's.

A four stroke scooter will do exactly the same job, easier and more comfortable.

EDIT: You didn't mention it, but if you are intending to go on to a bigger bike, definitely get a proper geared bike :).

Get a scooter.
50cc "bikes" with gears are cool, right up until the point when the guy on the Peugeot scooter beats you off the lights.

I had a Yammy DT50MX when I was 16 by the way.

Who cares thogh? A geared bike wil set you in a much better position when it comes to getting onto proper bikes.

I had a DT50R when I was 16 and all the Peugeot kiddes could beat me but that didn't matter a year later when I had a decent bike. I could drive that bike properlyu, I could get my knee down long bewfore the rest were learning. I could take my bkie at 70mph over rough terrain and liuft the front wheel at 50mph on the road. Had I not had aproper bike when I was 16 I may not have been abe to do these thing when I got my first 125. Admittedly I had extensive motocross experience but the road experience was invaluable.

Forget scooters.

EDIT: Apologies for hte spelling, I'm hal;f cut.

I am planning on moving onto a car on the week I turn 17 through a crash course. But I always like having the best stuff :D Even though it may not be the fastest but at least it'll look like a proper motorbike next to my friends' scooters'

I had a de-restricted RS50 and it is one of the fastest 50cc bikes/scooters, nothing could keep up, and Im not fibbing!

Same for me, I had a de-restricted RS50 at 16 and the only scooter I knew which was quicker had a 80cc kit on it! I loved mine, was great fun even when I fell off it trying to get my knee down

Until someone with a proper motorbike parks next to yours :p

As long as the driver is not 16 it's fine by me :)
also, what are the consequences of being caught with a de-restricted rs50 at the age of 16?

I guess you will be riding something not on your license entitlement/insurance so will get done for both!, not likely then not unless they are a clued up copper who knows what speeds one should be able to do etc.

It won't look like a proper motorbike at all. It will look like an RS50. Anyone who cares enough to look at it will know what it is.

oooeooo :p

oooeooo :p

I will be driving under my own entitlement, with a CBT and provisional license because isn't that all I need?

Aslong as the bike isnt over 14.6bhp :p

I think thats for 17 years old with only a cbt.

I had an RS50 at 16, got it new and it had to be restricited to be legal, think there only about 12bhp full derestricted. Anyway restricted you'll be lucky to see 35+mph, i got mine derestricted after a few weeks which was illegal. But a restricted 50cc bike is dangerously slow.

At full power it'll do 60mph easy enough, i actually managed to get mine upto 70mph down a hill. :)

Definitely get a decent second hand one though rather than a new one, keep it for a year then upgrade to the RS125, that is an awesome little 125. They depreciate loads in a year too.

Yea your right, max speed of 31mph at 16! if your fit enough you can cycle quicker!

Personally I never bothered, as said max speed of 31mph is dangerous, I didnt want to spend anything over £100 to do 31mph :p I just waited and saved my money so I could get a nice 125, unless you really need one to get around that is, if not get an RS125 at 17 and you wont worry about your mates on 'peds' then.

on the RS125 it basically just a power valve that goes into the exhaust outlet of the cylinder.

I was told the RS50 uses a blanking plate type thing that basically reduces the exhaust outlet.
