Aprillia RS 50 Dashboard

So i have in my possession an Aprillia RS 50 2001(?) model.

And theres 1 problem. On the dashboard theres a MPH metre, rev counter and a temperature. How am i supposed to know how much petrol is in the tank? Is there anything i can buy that will tell me? I'm told the only way to know is when i run out while riding... no thanks.
 
AFAIK, there's no way to "tell" for sure how much fuel is in your tank. On my Aprilia RSV Mille I have a low fuel warning light that comes on when I have @50 miles range left. You may well have a low fuel warning light on the RS50's dash, I'm not sure.

You should have a low fuel light, just keep track of how many miles you expect to get to a tank and fill up before you get to that figure.
 
Fill up, set fuel tap to "on" and note the current mileage, run 'till you hit reserve (i.e. have to turn the fuel tap to "res") and again note the mileage. Head to a garage asap and from then on, top up before you're expecting to hit reserve.

I fill up every 80-90miles or before I start off a long trip, I get around 100 before hitting reserve and 20 on reserve but I'd rather not hit reserve if I can at all help it, that way I have at least a 30 mile overhead to find fuel.

It's not too bad once you get used to it.. I've only ever had one bike with a light and none with a guage. Not once have I run dry.

Thanks for the advice i'll give that a shot. I've actually come down from a 125 with a gauge. I'd of never thought it would have been like this.

Amen to this. I've never had a gauge on a bike and only my latest has a fuel warning light. I've always just zeroed the trip when I fill up and know that when I hit 150 miles I will need to fill up in the next 10 miles. I once read that Japanese bikes were designed to go roughly that far on a tank as that's how far the average human can go before needing a stretch or a wee!

If you don't fancy running the bike dry or onto reserve, fill up, ride for 50 miles, then fill up again. See how many litres you put in, check the owner's manual/internet for your tank's capacity and that should enable you to work out how far you can safely go on a tank before you need to worry.

What do you mean?

To expand on what i said i meant; My first bike was a Skyjet 125cc (don't laugh) and it had a petrol metre so i could easily monitor how much petrol i had. Now i've sold that and now have this Aprillia 50cc. I just thought a 50cc would be easier to maintain than a 125cc.

Is the Aprillia 50cc faster than the Skyjet 125cc.:)
