Aquiring IP Address problem

My mate installed his Sky broadband today and all went ok but every now and then the internet goes off and it says something like, Aquiring IP address!! This happens with the ethernet and Wireless setups.

He has tried rebooting router etc but no joy.

Any ideas why this keep happening please? Ta

XP is the OS. and the router is on a shelf with nothing around it.
