9,170 so far. Seems like I constantly have to keep my eyes on my ship more than anything, or I'm going to be taken out by a shot from nowhere!

This is one of those games that, without a high score challenge like this, I'd pick up, play twice and just put aside. But it's pretty good once you get to grips with it a bit.
I picked up two of those blue capsules on one go, and it gave me a 10k bonus and teleported me to stage 2-4, instead of continuing to 1-4 after the bonus stage, on one go. I died immediately though

Tbh, I've found that to be the key to shmups in general.
Do you find this easier starting with 1 ship or going for the double?

I definitely think the double is best bet.
You essentially have exactly the same number of lives, but double firepower is so much better at clearing the screen. For as long as it lasts.
I've been wondering if you can earn a 2nd ship back at any point. I've not gotten very far yet, though.
